Meta Prompt
The meta answer is an event involving introductions
Hi folks. It seems the urge to create meta puzzles is contagious, so welcome to yet another first-time constructor MMM.
I had the idea for this sometime this spring, but waited until the semester was over to tackle actually creating it, since I correctly anticipated that it would be a whole new form of rabbit hole.
Big thanks to test solvers Abide and Wendy Walker, who were super encouraging and helped make it better (especially with respect to difficulty level). And of course to Joe Ross for tech support.
Hope you enjoy!

            Puzzle 10', meta 45'
Nice mechanic. First I got stuck in a big rabbit hole by seeing Grant and Lee in opposite corners, which fit with clash in the center. After finding the correct metanism, I still got stuck on some near matches (role v element, tussle v clash).

Don't apologize for my stupidity. It was such a good puzzle, something I couldn't hope to accomplish in my wildest dreams. Hoping to get stumped by more of your work!

Really great, very solid debut! Wish I had gotten this without your nudges, but post-nudge it still required some work and still preserved the aha! I did get thrown a bit that MELEE could satisfy 29D as both a band and a battle (CLASH), tho TUSSLE was one square over for a quick back solve. But I thoroughly enjoyed having this squirrel around in my brain all morning!

Ouch, sorry, was totally ignorant of the band there. Thanks for the kind words, and very glad to hear the nudges didn't ruin the aha. :)

Not a band I had ever heard of, but yeah... I imagine you can't swing a dead cat into a crossword grid and not hit a band name!

                                That was great but I'm clearing making an error on ME-tier = ROLE = R, when I (presumably) need ME-tier =??????? = E.
Those were great though. I actually had to google "MEant" and "MErest" to see what those could mean.

Okay, here’s the rabbit hole: SHAKESPEARE!!!! Anybody else?? THANE in the very middle, with that very suggestive clue (a certain character), then Bianca (Othello’s wife), the Hamlet/Falstaff clue for ROLES, SCENES beside it, “her husband’s to ALEPPO gone” (Macbeth), and “his affections dark as EREBUS” (Merchant of Venice). My theory for the title was something about introducing characters, or introducing the cast, but how to get there? So I searched and searched for some kind of companions or connections to the plays around the edge but no luck.
Nudges were definitely needed, and the “literal title” one was a great nudge. “Symmetrical” helped too. GREAT first puzzle (or hundredth puzzle!)

Thanks so much, and very sorry for the rabbit hole. :) The Hamlet/Falstaff thing was partly there to point people toward the answer to the THANE clue (though also b/c I like Shakespeare). But never saw the other bits. Glad you liked it though!

Aleppo is also in Othello, in the "not wisely but too well" speech: And say besides, that in Aleppo once, Where a malignant and a turban’d Turk . . .

Great puzzle, thank you! I had similar problems as @woozy - “métier” I originally thought SMITHS (then ROLE, before re-reading the clue for ELEMENT) and jumped to “STING” - which I then linked to 2-down via the song “Eric the half-a-Bee”!!! Oh how the mind doth wander as not quoted by either of 23-across

Well done. First "early nudge" did the trick for me.

This was fantastic. I loved the cluing, and there was some good trivia in there, which is always cool to see. Love the mechanism, and I was thrown for a little bit, but I pulled it out! Also love the bonus step of the end. What a debut!!

Wow, Alan, VERY nice inaugural...a level 2+ for a kickoff puzzle and a nice one at that. I'll admit to having a tough time filling the grid (I think it might be because I don't know your "voice" because after I got going and could catch your style it was OK) and needing Nudge one (yes I know I should not have but I did). I was desperately trying to anagram the letters on the edge because I could almost get REHERSAL and along with DRESS I thought...but no, that would have been far too bizarre (sounds like somehting I might do!). After the first nudge I tried MISS TIC, MISS DRESS and looked for SEER and something that might translate to GAUDY. I also wondered if you were allowing first names, i.e. "I'd like you to meet my friend VI AGRA...who no doubt would be an upstanding citizen...but could not make it work. I think it was THANE that tipped it for me because I assumed all along that the fifth word would be in the middle and when I tried MR THANE and said to myself merthane I remembered gas...hey that could have been METHANE....wait a minute allow ME to introduce!!! (Bells, lights, whistles). Enjoyed it a lot sir, look forward to more.
