Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is where the action is
The first-ever high five appears to have happened in 1977 during a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros. It was the last game of the season, and Dodgers outfielder Dusty Baker had just hit a home run - his 30th of the season. The accomplishment made the Dodgers the first team in Major League history to have four players hit 30 homers. Baker's rookie teammate Glenn Burke was waiting for him on deck, and as Baker crossed home plate, Burke triumphantly lifted his hands in the air. "The way the legend goes… Glenn put his arm high in the air, and Dusty didn't know what to do, so he slapped it," Dodgers historian Mark Langill said in the ESPN documentary "The High Five." It caught the public's attention, so the Dodgers adopted it as a symbol of team pride and performed it regularly over the next few seasons, to the delight of the media and fans of the team. (cf. https://www.businessinsider.com/where-does-the-high-five-come-from-origin-2017-4.) All that to say, the answer to the meta is where the action is. Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$10 gives you access to 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game. You won't quite know what to expect: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, sometimes all of those, and sometimes none! One thing is for sure, these are some of the more creative metas my brain has been able to come up with. And there's more: this time there's a mega-meta!

Great puzzle, and also nice history lesson in the intro. I never thought about the origins of the high five!

Double fun - guessed UP TOP just from the prompt, and then found my way to the slick mechanism

              Same here, except I don't see the mechanism. This is the 2nd time this week that I guessed the meta from the prompt but can't find the mechanism. :{

Pay attention to the hint at 43A; if 5s are VEEs, where would High ones go?

Ran around trying to find v-shaped entries and hunting down Google searches & obscure references when all I had to do is follow directions... Anyway, Very nice, always impressed by the Voodoo that you do, I wish I could understand your Vast intellect, but im down low and too slow

I did the exact same thing! vent and rant… and I was wondering why those letters RPOTU didn’t spell anything

It's RANTS in the grid which doesn't agree in number with VENT.
                  • boharr 3s · 2023-10-24T15:56:56.194Z
Took me a bit because I thought that Vent could be Blows Off Steam = Rants.
                    • DrTom 17:32 · 2023-10-24T16:58:14.311Z
Nice puzzle, high five! I got a little lost giving RANTS to VENT and PIPE to VEIN. But good sense prevailed and I had most of the letters for UP TOP but needed a T. When I got the only possible candidate I saw my error. Loved the puzz (buzz or not!).
                      • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-24T19:09:11.767Z
Fun but So ... let's off steam RANTS/VENT was not part of the mechanism?
                        • benchen71 constructor · 2023-10-24T20:57:20.860Z
No. Plus they don't agree in number.
                          • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-25T16:13:24.084Z
Rants and vents do agree in number. They are the only pair that does.
(Your are assuming that seeing the "high" grid entries was apparent. If one hasn't seen them your comments were very hard to understand)
                            • benchen71 constructor · 2023-10-25T21:20:44.249Z
But it is ENT in the grid, giving you VENT which is singular, which doesn't agree with RANTS which is plural.
                              • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-25T23:02:37.524Z
Yes, but I didn't see any of those, you see.

Well actually VENT is plural (they vent) and RANTS is singular (he rants) 😉. But yes you are right — RANTS was not in the same number form as VENT so I went looking elsewhere and found PIPE.

                            Also what's the order?
(Surely that was THAT obscure a simpsons reference. And no one needs a google search for the starks...)

The order comes from the V words going left to right. Nothing complicated this week!

No, you may have inadvertently matched the entries wrongly.

Well I am doing it in my head. But surely ODE is the shortest entry of the bunch and it's furthest to the right. So if you aredoing it left to right the last letter is O?
Well maybe the day after tomorrow I'll have access to pencil and paper and I'll try to figure it out.
                                    • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-25T04:41:08.567Z
Okay. 27D (PROVE) is the furthest to the left. So P is first. And next is THREAD. Then UNCLEAR than PIPE and furthest right is ODE.
So what am I doing wrong? Doo I not understand what "high" means?

Use the order of the V words, from left to right: VAGUE->UNCLEAR, VINDICATE->POINT, VEIN->THREAD, VERSE->ODE, VENT->PIPE.
                                          • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-25T16:02:22.018Z
Well. I was using words in the order that I saw them. First was PROVE/VALIDATE then was THREAD/VEIN then RANTS/VENTS then UNCLEAR/VAGUE then PIPE/VENT and finally ODE/VERSE. As uptop was a good answer I figured RANTS/VENTS wasn't intentional.

The first thing I tried was adding V to the across answers, but I could only find one spot where that would work. Can you believe that it never occurred to me to try it with the down answers? Ugh! So frustrating. I needed a nudge to see that. I see that others got it just from the prompt -- that never occurred to me, either. Great puzzle. I just wish my brain had been working!! Thanks, Ben.
                                            • woozy 10:23 · 2023-10-25T16:08:33.508Z
Never occurred to me to add V to anything. After trying clues with V, I tried find words with arbitrary V synonyms. Had to try each entry arbitrarily and subjectively. It worked but we had an extra R and no order. And the "high" in the title was never referenced.
Can't say I loved it. Until I figured the intended method (I don't think it has occurred to Ben one could not get it). Then.... it's a great puzzle, after all.

Thanks for the puzzle, Ben! Was pretty sure the answer was going to be Up Top, but I spent a lot of time staring at the Ds in the puzzle (there are an awful lot of them), before a kind muggle gave me the slightest of course corrections. Also, was stuck for a while on the close proximity of the grid entries for 36A and 44A and whether that meant anything, but I guess that was just an Easter Egg? In any event, a High Five to you for this one!

Very nice indeed. Started out looking for Vs in the upper part of the grid, but didn't spot them until the second nudge told me that I was doing the right thing. Got there speedily after that.

Really enjoyed this one (prolly because I saw it pretty quickly, despite its cleverness). Keep ‘em coming, Benchen!!

Very nice, clean, elegant construction—and a satisfying click! Also, cute Easter egg 😊.

I still needed ALL the nudges, but I think this was the first time I can honestly say I submitted a correct meta answer!
So impressed by the feats of construction y'all do. Looking forward to gradually improving my skills (just as vanilla puzzles have taken me literally thousands of tries to get where I am…)

Nudge #3 pushed me to add the V's outside the grid, rather than look for possibilities with the 5-letter entries, or multiples of 5 entries, located in the top of the grid. Nice to see that the mechanism was much more reasonable than anything I was trying for! Thanks for the puzzle, Ben!

FYI I think the last name in 38D has a typo, which honestly sent me down a very short rabbit hole of looking for other typos. Then I thought the meta was built around other Roman numerals, which, again, wasn't very helpful, but the nudges set me back on track. Thanks for another great MOAT!

Still needed an external head slap (beyond the nudges) to get me to expand my vision just a bit more...Nice new twist here.
