I got the meta with a third of the grid. Now to finish and figure out the black square thingies.

After a very brief interlude to check whether a letter could be placed in each square to make a word, I went back to the title and saw "rings" and thought hmm.... For some reason I thought CINNABAR was a spice, but now I know!

Much fun on a Monday (or any other day.) Thank you, Jay!
I have to admit that I took a stab at the answer based on the title and looking at a list of iconic number one songs from the 50's. I was surprised to be correct but then I had to go back and backsolve. Would CLOCK be the technically correct answer? But you also accepted ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK?

55ac is fantastic.
I get that there are “rocks” around the black squares, but they read anti-clockwise! Guessed it had to be what it is. Fun puzzle!

started trying to fill in the blanks, but wasn't getting anywhere and noted 53D and "rock around" fitting with geological rings...
lol a couple of incorrect answers because I was thinking one letter per block (i.e., that together they would make up the clock). So I tried TIME and FACE and then finally realized it could be just the whole word :) :) Very fun and different. Thanks!

Very clever! Really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Excellent! Had to Google '50's songs (because I couldn't think of any, not because I'm that young) but I knew it when I saw it!
I originally majored in geology before realizing how bad I am at math, so I sat and stared for a long time at PLYMOUTH before it finally dawned on me it was Plymouth Rock. That's doubly funny because I changed my major to history Great puzzle/meta!

I tried Jailhouse Rock first. The center piece is in a 'jail' of rock, sort of.
i did the exact same thing! i googled "rock" songs 1950s and scoured a list... when jailhouse rock was on the list i justified that the center black square is a jail... when it was wrong i went back to the list... giving the song a listen now... definitely have heard it before :)

Fun puzzle, Jay! Took me a while to figure out the meta prompt, though! Haha!
HeadinHome 🤓7:32 · 2023-07-24T23:48:04.846Z
How many others put “rock” to complete the phrases “Plymouth ___”, etc. Duhhhh… Read the prompt you ninny. That was fun!
Well my temporal advantage was in full swing. Given my decade, the only thing that came to mind for an iconic #1 50's hit, especially when I saw Bill Haley, was Rock Around the Clock. Then I back filled - actually in truth I did not because I never saw the rocks until much later though I knew they had to be there. A fun puzzle Jay.

Great puzzle, how do you geniuses come up with such fantastic ideas, I wish I could ever know

Just a heads-up for anyone interested that there is a great new meta constructor flying under the radar here on crosshare: https://crosshare.org/florawynn

Thx for the puzzle! Loved it! I’m not great at geology but was familiar enough!
This was so good, I decided to spend all week solving. One prompt, six nudges and a PM later, mind blown. Thanks, Jay, a very rocky but memorable journey!

Took some shoving before I could find a rock name. SAD indeed.
