Explanation: Per 17A, as far as I know, Mikey G's last name is GRACZYK. Following the next three instructional spanners changes my last name one step at a time: GRECZYK, GRETZYK, GRETZKY. The last is the answer of perhaps the only hockey player I know, fitting, since he wore #99!
Sometimes, I'll ask my students to spell my last name because I go by "Mr. G" so often. A week or two ago, a student said, "That's easy! G." I thought that was good, haha. (I surmise the actual pronunciation is GRAH-check, but that shifted a generation or two back.)

Aw, heck, all I needed were the first two long entries and I could see where this was going! Nice one! I bet you use that transformation a lot.
An homage to "How Well Do You Follow Directions?," one of my all-time favorite Dell puzzles. Maybe it was my very orderly mind when I was younger, since I can see how some could find that kind of tedious!
And now I see you put Graczyk in the note... LOL. I had no idea what your last name was, so I just started from GASIC (G + rhymes with BASIC), and ended up at GRETCI. That looked close enough to Gretzky, assuming sort of a Slavic pronunciation on the ci for me.
Yeah, I realized after publishing, "Oh, yeah, if they Crosshare it, they won't have the last name," hence the note, hahaha. Clever way to do it, though!

nicely done!! Even the non-sportsing queen could solve this one. And on a hunch I checked - sure enough he is player 99
Yeah, that one was a bit "meh" to get to 15 letters. The whole puzzle is reminiscent of one of my favorite Dell puzzles: "How Well Do You Follow Directions?" where you'd have about 18-20 steps with things like "Move the second consonant from the right to the immediate left of the third vowel from the left." Some might find those litanies tedious, but I always liked their logic and tried to guess the end result before I got there!

Knew where this was going when I saw the title and prompt. Still, a fun solve. Thanks for the puzzle, Mikey!

Nice! Polish, I assume? My last name (by marriage) is somewhat similar (and prone to being mispronounced)
Mikey, that was a Great One! Having lived in both Philadelphia (Broad Street Bullies) and Detroit (The Wings - as opposed to just Wings the singing group) and now in a state that, despite never having seen much ice has actually been the resting place for the Stanley cup four different times (2004, 2020, 2021, 2024), I am tuned into hockey. I needed only one letter change to know it was Wayno you were sticking with. Loved the puns as usual. I am still a little distracted by the "Thank you ma'am" (completely threw me in the WSJ puzzle because I figured IT was the Mx). Supposedly it is because the bump makes your head nod like you were giving a genteel agreement...of course it could also be because if hit at speed it makes the car go WHAM, BAM????
Doesn't matter because I liked the puzzle even with the reference to a "What?"
Hmmm - wonder of I need to do one called "Follow the Economic Indicators" about a certain Federal Reserve Chief?
I can't recall where you hang your hat now - one of my students loves hockey and was avidly watching the Stanley Cup. I actually don't know if I could name all professional major league hockey teams if given an unlimited amount of time, haha. I figured my mom would be like, "You've never heard of that term for a bump in the road?" She did not either!
And, yeah, you could get from you to Ben B. in about 4 or 5 steps, I'd think!

(AGAIN realized i forgot to check that box for the context right when I hit return…). This grid was tricky! Had to look up 2 or 3 to get enough crossers to figure some out. What a great idea for a meta!
