The answer to the meta is something that, unlike this puzzle, cannot be reversed
There are times when a meta idea occurs to me and I think, "Can I do that?" For this puzzle, though, the operative question is, "Should I do that?" You may decide I was wrong to proceed; you may question my sanity; you may even question your own before you reach the end of the grid. But please don't 42 down! If you persevere you will find yourself in a position to solve the meta, the answer to which is something that, unlike this puzzle, cannot be reversed. However, if you would prefer a less challenging grid (but with a slightly harder meta), then click on over to "Directionally Unchallenged" (https://crosshare.org/crosswords/yKMjrhD9wX4y9A7dvTwu/directionally-challenged-meta). Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

Really cool idea! Although my brain hurts from reading the clues backwards :-)
Berto 🤓3:36 · almost 2 years ago
Nice one Ben! Went with “time” originally as I’d only got “THEARRWF” in the other reversible entries, but found the missing O’s (with a mental “Ohhh”)!

Wow. Level defied!

Next challenge - puzzle based on palindromes? Kayak, racecar, . . . .

Nice one. But now I'm reading everything backwards, which is very confusing. Thanks for the elzzup!

when i was a kid, i used to try to read, write, and speak in back-words... thanks for those fun memories (i also had a clock that ran counterclockwise... i'm weird)
now what do we do with the words reading up (i see rube, siri, eta, maybe more)? as recent metas have shown, i have a hard enough time getting past step 1, if there are more steps i'm toast... mmm toast i should go get breakfast

also the title made me think it might be related to the games magazine meta... which i still need to submit, so thanks for the reminder! :)

a VERY unique puzzle. I don't know if you can see wrong answers submitted, but first I noticed TIME and TIDE and tried submitting those separately and together. Before I started highlighting everything that worked both ways. Thanks Ben!
nice puzzle with a nice AHA moment! something was up when EMIT wasn't backwards!! thanks for the puzzle :)

Yup, I just had to go take a couple of tylenol -- that's paracetamol for you, Ben! But it was worth it! Wondering now if I can go solve the other and then backsolve for the meta since I know the answer. Thanks for the puzzle and for putting yourself through those contortions, Ben!

Very nice puzzle!

Very clever! Impressive you made it work. Now I need to look at the other version.
I did this one on my computer, and it would have definitely been easier on paper where I could just write in the words right to left.
And I'd have counted 31A and spelled arrow with 2 As except that no one but a pilot would recognize ADF as a navigation radio :)

Really liked this one. A mechanism I hadn’t seen before and the last entry was an inspired touch.
I knew it probably wasn’t meta related, but when highlighting words that worked backwards I did highlight “VCC…” that’s usually the circuit board marking on stuff for positive voltage input… and I was just working on a hobby circuit.
ereht tog I tub, elihw a kooT! Obviously the Devil lived on no mad dam! Fun, a little eye crossing, but fun as usual. Thanks Ben! I know from experience that this is harder than it seems since so many words, particularly short ones, will form another word written backward, I am sure this was a tough fill.

My head hurts a little, but well worth it. Great concept and well executed.
