Taking One for the Team

· By Bird Lives · Published 2024-02-05T12:15:14.892Z

Meta Prompt
The answer is an entertainer at a past Super Bowl Halftime show.
This one is playing a bit tougher than I expected. Here are a couple of nudges: 1. Parsing the title, one might say that solving the meta is a singular achievement. 2. Along similar lines, eleven Easter eggs are nestled in the clues. A couple of the clues hold more than one. These goodies are not necessary for the solution, but they might help. And it might be enjoyable just to find them and put them in your basket. 3. Themer entries all have two words. 4. The first word is just filler.
  1. But the second word shouldn’t stand alone. It has to be accompanied by a team member. One of these has two possible teammates; either will do. One of these has two possible teammates; either will do. Four of these five new terms should be familiar. The fifth comes from a scientific field. You may have to Google this one to confirm.
6.. Taken together, these new pairs are not dumb jocks. That is, they are not clueless. They have clues. In fact, the relevant clues lead to the crucial entries. 7. The letters from those entries are not the complete answer. The remaining step is consistent with the themers, the title, and the Easter eggs.

Lots of teams in the clues. Did I miss something on the path or were they just decorations?

Easter eggs -- eleven of them, as I'll mention in the nudges. Did you find them all?
        • boharr 2s · 2024-02-05T19:21:21.327Z
          I found eleven.
          • Meg 17s · 2024-02-05T21:14:25.775Z
I did if you count the Bill in Billy.
            • hoover 2s · 2024-02-07T22:59:08.310Z
Bill wasn't one of them, but Commander was. I keep forgetting about that team name.

nice puzzle! very elegant that the meta answer also ends with a team :)... had to backsolve for the M - i'm going to assume that red bill is a thing... midnight cowboy was my way into the puzzle... 52D shabu-shabu is a japanese hot pot dish but it's popular in korea as well - thank you for the fun puzzle and for the generous amount of team-named easter eggs... my favorite clue is 13D as i use that intensifier a lot

Gas bill (mortgage Red giant (sun)

Phil—I think it’s red giant and gas bill, but I could be wrong.

I should have known shabu-shabu. The clue I've used for ASS is "Moon unit" -- less linguistic, more fun.

Got the metanism with "Midnight Cowboy" but most definitely had to consult the list of NFL teams after that! Fun puzzle, Jay!

I was thinking of you, of course, when I was constructing. WWWD? What would Wendy do? Crumple up the print-out and toss it in the waste basket probably. Thanks for slogging through it.

BALD eagle and DODGE ram were my way in ... once I remembered the DODGErs are not a football team! Fun metanism, and loved the easter eggs (I counted 3 in 5A alone — wow!)
                      • MatthewL 🤓10:34 · 2024-02-05T21:28:08.201Z
                        Dodge Charger also works.

Eleven Easter eggs in all. One other clue has more than one. DODGE has another possibility besides Ram, It's very close by, and it's the one I was thinking of when I made the puzzle.

Huh, today I learned LA has two football teams! I better watch out, if I learn too many fun facts I won't be able to say I'm bad at sports puzzles anymore!

Wow that was a lot of guessing. ( : it’s “after midnight”… and “I’m Ba(l)d” had me sure it was Michael Jackson, then I tried his sister just for the mammories… er, memories. Then James made me try James Taylor, Etta James… James Brown.. yep, there it is. Guess I need to do more googling… though lots of guessing works too, apparently.
                              • Bird Lives constructor · 2024-02-05T23:23:36.799Z
As the title suggests, the mechanism is singular forms of NFL team names. That goes for JAMES as well.

I was confused about Dodge and Chrysler -- didn't know they were the same company? So...I thought Dodge Ram must be "a transport with runners"?!... which left me with A MESS! hahaha

All around the mechanism until I could finally get to the answer. Didn't help that I had RED CHIEF and GAS GIANT. Nice puzzle and good workout.

lol tied myself in so many knots. Saw the flexibility of the 1A and 8A clues right away of course. Also matched 53A to Eagle early on (though at that point Falcon was an option). Then got stuck (besides the Easter eggs). Finally decided to look through the Chrysler product list which uncovered RAM, then for a bit I forgot about the theme entries and was just chasing alternates. Eventually saw DODGE and copped on to basic idea. But then I had GAS GIANT / AFTER JET / MIDNIGHT COWBOY / BALD EAGLE / TAX BILL / DODGE RAM--so I was persuaded that all 10 words would work. Also thought "Sky hunter" was going to match Falcon (RED FALCON almosts googles well enough), though wasn't sure how to distinguish Eagle and Falcon. This morning Nudge 4 disabused me of the notion that all 10 words worked, and once I tried to backsolve I instantly saw JAMES BROWN, whose halftime performance I remember. Never did figure out the M, because I had GAS GIANT (even though I also considered RED GIANT I never closed the loop with GAS BILL). Ah well, fun puzzle that I managed to make much harder than it was. 😂 Thanks.

No way I could have connected both words of the themers to other answer-related entries, but thanks for thinking I could. The complement I had in mind for TAX DODGE was Charger, not Ram. I'm more of a muscle-car guy than a pick=up guy.
