Meta Prompt
The meta answer is an actor.
Hello, friends! Here is my first puzzle of 2024. Thanks to Abide for being such an awesome mentor, Cap'n Rick for his kind encouragement, and Joe Ross for his technical support. Nudges: Based on the title, what do you think should you be looking for in the grid?
There are eight of them, symmetrically placed.
Read the unnecessarily wordy clues for those eight, and keep in mind the prompt -- you're looking for an actor.
How could that verbosity help you to derive a surname for each?
Video spoiler: I really wanted to post a photo of my MALE CAT playing with various untidy SKEINS OF YARN in my knitting basket.

Thanks, Wendy! I'm horrible at film trivia and still had a great time solving (I think that's the mark of some mighty fine puzzle constructing!)

Thank you so much! That is so nice of you! Sorry about the not-as-well-known soap-opera guy -- but I could not find anyone else with a six-letter first name that could be clued as a not-name and a last name that started with an A!
    • DIS 🤓7:24 · 2024-01-22T13:40:41.365Z
I didn't know all of them, but enough to be sure of the answer. Great puzzle!

Thanks! What I love about the answer is that both his first and last names could also be clued as not-names.

Much fun!! I confess first had TERRY GILLIAM but once I saw where the others were headed, I back-solved.

Im absolutely horrible and dont understand how to solve a Meta. even with the answer to this one, I cannot figure out how to get to the answer? any help?

There are 8 first names in the across entries, each with an unusual word in the clue. For example, DUSTIN and "hook", which clues Hoffman.

Fun one, Wendy! Had to back solve for a few, but ultimately got there. TERRY THOMAS was the toughest, but thankfully, Mr. G was up to the task. Thanks for the puzzle.

Yeah, I am sorry about that one, too. My initial attempt for this puzzle was to use composers' names (e.g., WOLFGANG = pack of canines -- how 'bout that!) but I just couldn't find enough of them to create a puzzle.
                    • lbray53 3s · 2024-01-22T15:35:17.686Z
Nicely done. I figured out what to do but only knew three of the actors with Mr. Google! Fun nevertheless.

Great fun. If only there had been a way to make it more of a challenge for the solver, not just the clue writer. When I'd finished and looked back at 1A, SHAM, I wondered if there were a way to make 68A KNOT or TONK to complete the anagram. There isn't. But there is the crypitic "Actor acknowledgements including mantra."

That part was not originally there, until solver Peter Abide came up with different actors than the ones I intended and I realized I needed some signposts in the clues. So glad you enjoyed it!

Great puzzle, Wendy! When I first solved I was thinking Peter "Falk", who always had trouble saying "goodbye" in his Columbo role ("Just one more thing.") and Dustin "Johnson" (the golfer, not the actor), who occasionally hits "hooks" off the tee. 😄
                                • Wendy Walker constructor · 2024-01-22T21:20:41.398Z
Haha! The clue for DUSTIN may be my favorite in the puzzle. And it is largely why I went with the obscure LINDEN, because I needed to match the six letters in DUSTIN. Your grids are perfection so you know ALL ABOUT that!

For "Weeds" I thought it was the TV show, so i didn't remember any Nicks from it before I googled that it was a movie too! I had Hader first for "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs"... I had the wrong movie and had to go back in time even more!... 65A should be re-clued... the teletubby is spelled Laa-Laa

For some reason, I began working on the meta from the bottom up -- S, K, N?, ??, H -- so there it was! Glanced back to see that I could name the first three actors simply on "well-known"-ability in order to get my TOM. Oh, and I just trusted you completely when it came to that Linden guy, Wendy! 😄 Lots of fun and a great idea!

Once ROADKILL showed up in the grid, I knew exactly how I was going to clue it. The clue I was really happy with was in fact the DUSTIN one. To get the movie name reference I pored over a list of his movies. Graduate? Hmmm ... was "Dust in the Wind" a song I listened to in graduate school? No, because I didn't GO to graduate school. Kramer vs. Kramer? Did Cosmo Kramer ever refer to the song? No. Then when I saw Hook, it all came together magically. You know the feeling!

Enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I thought immediately of Rear Window when I saw both Jimmy and Grace in the grid, so was prepared to notice those words in the clues!

I was hoping that breaking into that "Rear Window" would set off some alarms! Glad it helped!

lol oops, apparently Crosshare ignores things in angle brackets. Above should say [ name ] actor [ keyword ]

I love IMDB, too. The problem is that I end up reading movie trivia for half-an-hour! ("Oh, my gosh, Rosamund Pike was in THAT?!")

That was fun! At first I saw way too many names, both across and down. Once I narrowed them down by looking at your delightful clues, it all fell into place. Thanks!

YES -- I went through a number of grids that were just chockful of names and started fearing that a workable grid would be impossible.

Well I managed to get it from thinking who the names might be, particularly at the end; GRACE I immediately thought KELLY and JIMMY well STEWART. So if NICK could be NOLTE I thought, that gives me NKS and can the others...yep they can. Later I went back and saw the beauty. Hey, don't knock LINDEN ASHBY, he graduated from the high school (well more of a prep school) right across the street from my church....of course Mortal Kombat would be hard to sneak into a clue. Fun one Wendy.

There must be loads, how do I… aha the clue is in the clues!!! Lots of googling needed (forgive me, not from these shores lol) - but got there! Fun puzzle!
