Meta Prompt
The answer is how an existing puzzle was given a completely different, and perhaps alluring, look
This puzzle came to being after I was influenced by solving a different puzzle and having some word play fun with its creator. I am sure you will all recognize its roots almost immediately. The mechanism is not the same but it is quite simple all the same. I give this a rating of:
KITTEN
Calico
Persian
Puma
Lion
Now, the hunt has begun, release the hounds (well OK, the cats)
Nudge Friday
Nudge 1] Besides being a nudge towards the mechanism and answer, the Title refers to a recent puzzle by Bird Lives
Nudge 2] As with many of my puzzles, the graphic is a nudge in itself
Nudge 3] Isn't it amazing how you can add a prefix to a word and get a whole new word (Hey wasn't that a Disney song?)
Nudge 4] Let me repeat, replacement is an important revenue source for some home repair people...
Nudge 5] There HAS to be a reason for my odd (and in my estimation, HILARIOUS) cluing to give words you do not expect. Do those words stand on their own?
THE SOLUTION:
It was after Bird Live’s “Resolution” puzzle and he and I were joking back and forth in PMs about other RE words. He came up with “Have the Osso Bucco again” for RE VEAL, and we batted around a few more. However when I came to REMEMBER I just knew I could not let it go and had to make a meta somehow. From there it was pretty smooth sailing and I saw I could get VAMPED pretty easily. Since REVAMPED is a word that, like the others, could be given a silly clue to get it (Called the bloodsuckers back to the castle?) and since it means to make something over so it looks different, it was the perfect word for a puzzle that was a Do Over. I also tossed everyone a nudge in the graphic since that is Mary Pickford in the 1st pic, and on the other side was the famous “vamp” Clara Bow.

It was also, for me, one of the most solved despite its slight digression with REMEMBER. I want to thank the 60+ of you for giving it a try and for all the kind comments.

- Well you KNEW it was coming! There was no way I was letting that go. The "funny" outweighs the "ew" (though of course as you can imagine my "ew" threshold is WAY higher than most. 6 years a plumber aboard a Navy vessel and close to 40 years in healthcare - little I have not seen and had to accept.)
- This was as extremely difficult because it was so easy. But I got it eventually.
- Grid was pretty tough for me, especially NE quadrant. But the meta was indeed as advertised. Fun stuff, thanks.

But this one worked well, and I think “kitten” is correct. As in most DrTom puzzles, I have a few lingering head scratchers (no, not lice… I mean I’m puzzled). Dreadful (like a wolf?) - DIRE ? And I just NOW figured out the MINIDRESSES clue… uh huh.
- There is and animal, probably mythical or at least more in story than truth, that is called a Dire Wolf. Ostensibly, if you are a Game of Thrones fan, the Starks all had Dire Wolves as pets/protectors. They are extinct of course and were probably the foe of the saber toothed tiger. But it was just fun to include it...you know me I'm always on a quest to make my clues interesting...though there have been frequent REquests not to in this venue (note I did not say REvenue...because my money is on me not trying to be "amusing")

Nice job recycling (or maybe remodeling? :}) I got MINIDRESSES clue but, if I may, wasn't so amused. Perhaps a less "salty" clue? In a similar vein, NYT and other major puzzle outlets have begun rewriting OGLE clues to indicate the negativeness of the word.

- RE-MEMBER was so good… I couldn’t remember the nursery rhyme so had “bone” for old mother hubbard’s dog and figured contibuance was some legalese I never heard of
- She went to the cupboard to give the poor dog a bone, but when she came there the cupboard was bare and so the poor dog had none. The word is continuance, not an easy or everyday word, but often comes up in Law & Order. Just a legal "delay", usually asking for more time to look into something. Glad you enjoyed REMEMBER I do believ it was one of my all time favorites.

- Took me a minute but nicely played! Never resent and as a matter of fact having a second single-photon emission computed tomography (it is a test known better by its acronym) is the word I would choose.
