thanks for the nice puzzle... i hurt myself today by taking embarrassingly long to suss out the metanism and then needing to look up the song instead of just using the grid, but i'll blame it on the rain and the fact that i am pop music dumb

Tried just about every song with fire I could think of and googled... but when I saw it it was an "of course!" moment.

On a case of just about one possibility I was convinced it was another.

Couple of false starts with Fire (which seemed like it could plausibly be on the list but apparently is not on of Jimi's 7 contributions) and Light My Fire (which is on the list). Figured there had to be another piece to it, and eventually after googling rock songs with fire in them I spotted what had to be the answer. Nice one, thanks. :)

Perfect for the SSS. I admit I had to use the Internet.. This title did not leap to mind, and when I did find it I was surprised to see it so high on the list, way ahead of Light My Fire.

Glad I figured it out without resorting to trying all 500 songs ;)

So, I trudged through FIRE by Arthur Brown, certainly in my memory banks but hardly a GREATEST category, then there is FIRE by the Pointer Sisters, again good but no. Hmm, the fire kept going around like it could not be stopped...Can't Stop the Fire by the Boss, certainly good but short and not much lyrics. The entries containing the words had nothing to do with orbs or balls so Jerry Lee Lewis was out, what to do, what to do. It was like I was just descending into this giant ring of fire, and as I went down the flames kept getting higher, it just burned, burned, burned - that ring of fire. Nice one Barbara, very Sunday satisfying of a solve.
