This was based on a silly typo in an early version https://crosshare.org/crosswords/h7x3S1OOh5FTyzNy7V2d/play-dough. It was intriguing and I couldn't let it go. The meta is almost an after-thought.
The meta is pretty straight-forward (although it may be a little hidden and hard to spot) and nothing unique or original, although the context certainly is.
Nudges:
1: The themers should be pretty darned obvious
2: The themers are the long entries that are silly puns about animals

10: E. Nigma was the name of the Riddler in "Batman". The authors were making a pun. What does the word "enigma" mean?

    Fantastic and creative meta! I have to confess I still haven't figured out what VOLEGATES sounds like but it must be a synonym for ANXIOUS. Or SAVORY. Or LIKE. I will ponder a while longer and PM to ask if nothing shakes loose. Love your cluing, too. So amazing to me that you can see something like that typo and turn it into a meta so quickly!

        A bit if a mental workout to be sure but an eventual walk on the wild side. To say anything else would make me a hippocrat and I would never mane to do that because I don't want to rein Woozy in I want him to remain unfettered, at least for a bit.😁
        I assume VOLEGATES should translate to VULGATES or common?

          Yeah, Volegates may be the weakest of them. But I think it's the most original. HIPPOCRACY is still the funniest and the strongest.

            I wouldn’t say weak - it’s quite clever! It’s just that I didn’t know that word. Despite the fact that as a product of the Chicago public school system, I suppose you could say I AM a vulgate😆 So thank you for my word of the day! I was looking up ANXIOUS synonyms because I thought that would be the most likely candidate for the “U”.

              It's like the "vulgate bible", or "in the volgate tongue" or "in the vulgar tongue". Tolkien's short story "Farmer Giles of Ham" frequently refers to "the vulgar tongue" and to an 11 year old me.... I was confused.
              My original thought was I'd do VOLE TEAR and ... I dunno, SATIRE? But I need something in length similar FELIS CITY and suddenly VULGATE seemed to go with the classic etymology motif. (Albeit in the other direction).
