Thanks, Hector. The corrected dates indicate the grid entries that comprise the "Washington Crossing the Delaware" painting - kinda like my "Painting by Numbers" ("American Gothic") meta a while back.
Okay. Show of hands. How many people saw the wrong dates and figured they had to figure the how big the mistake was (off by 51, 67, 16 and 34 years) and it NEVER occurred to them to just take the correct years in the first place?
LOL this was fantastic. I stared at 23 down for the longest time before I got it... I hadn't noticed the year mentioned in 1A, and was trying to think of another country that might have had a civil war going on in 1895. Then I saw 31D and things started clicking. And yes I had to google to confirm some of the dates. (But I did remember the date "the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor", to quote Bluto). Fun one, and educational too. Thanks Capn!
I'll credit your husband with an assist, Cindy. Thanks to both of you for solving!

Fun puzzle… I did go down one quick rabbit hole. Instead of just using the correct dates, I took the difference (so for Pearl Harbor, 8 - 7 = 1) and that obviously didn’t work. I did need the correct numbers to see the hidden message in the grid, though, which I probably should not have had to in retrospect.
Thanks, Laura. Yes, this one could be solved without the mechanism if you first noticed the themers in the grid.

"Gentle ripple" -- haha -- Not sure if that's what the conditions were like! I did the math too -- hey, no vowels!? Then I considered the actual dates and looked at the beginning letters of the words. Still rather strange. Well, W starts WASHING -- I could add TON to get another prez. And I think there's a TON in the grid. And D starts DELA -- I could add NO to that to get DELANO! But I doubt there's a NO in the grid... Oh wait, never mind. And that's how it went down for me in this very fun and clever puzzle! Thanks, Rick!
thanks for the puzzle... i don't know much about solving, but i learned today it helps to actually read the clues... and the grid... i have much more to learn...
Ha ha! Glad this meta was a learning experience for you, merlinnimue.

Hidden in plain sight makes for a great puzzle. When I finally got it, I wondered how I could not have seen WASHINGTON crossing DELAWARE, especially since at Thanksgiving someone mentioned Washington Crossing, PA, which is 10 miles from where we were.
LIke Hector, I figured there must be some significance to the incorrect numbers. I tried subtracting the correct ones from the wrong ones (78 - 27 for Lindy, enc.) and got nowhere. Were they just arbitrary?
Hi Jay. I actually crossed the Delaware twice on my holiday trip to and from PA. The incorrect dates were somewhat arbitrary, but to avoid confusion, I made sure that none appeared in the grid (i.e. all >75).

Now you tell me. You don't want to know how much time I spent juggling those numbers. (BTW, it's <75.) In the reveal, are you going to photoshop your own face onto one of the figures in the boat?
Hey, adding myself to Washington's boat is a great idea! Maybe I can fish off the back. Re: 75, I just meant that my "incorrect" dates were > 75 (e.g. LINDY - 78, KENNEDY -76, etc.) so that folks wouldn't try to look for those numbers in the grid.
Funny because I got the GWDRT and thought George Washington Delaware River Throw, but of course he apocryphally threw it across the Potomac. Then I saw the GWT were in GEN WASHINGTON and DR in DELAWARE RIVER. Very nice and, except for not finding the right combo to suit Crosshare for many tries, relatively low anxiety. Nice fill as always.
Thanks, Tom. I had forgotten that myth about Washington throwing the coin across the river. Makes sense. They say that when he was asked for ID, he just whipped out a quarter.
When it comes to spending money, I tend to be a little frugal. In fact, I have a dollar bill in my wallet that is so old, George Washington still has dark hair!
Oh man. Totally missed the graphical component to this for a while. I was convinced initially that WWT... was going to lead me to WW TWO, and then, it just went nowhere. I need to do the graphic check more often, that's a cool metanism. Thanks!
Thanks for solving, kurtalert. Yeah, every once in a while we throw a graphical one at you.

Very fun! I didn't clue in on the years at all, but I did catch DELA and WARE, and HESS and IANS, so I tried revolutionary war. Then I figured I must be missing SOMETHING and saw GENWASHINGTON and it clicked!
Thanks, Rob. You didn't really need to uncover the metanism if you saw the graphical elements. You just never know...

Briefly played with the HINT being the word TON (intersects it) — so that you add TON (which is “much” as in I know a TON about history?) to other words to make cities … LincolnTON, HessTon, WashingTON, is there a WareTON?? … ohhhhh duh. Washington is crossing at DELA - WARE. I never even picked up on the wrong dates, BTW. Never used any nudges, and swear I did not see any spoilers or answers posted (I know I did this one way late… how did I miss it last weekend??)
Thanks for solving, Wendy. Yes, a few people noticed the hidden "crossing" without noticing the erroneous dates. This was another reason why I rated the difficulty on the easier side.
so good!!! i knew that pearl harbor day was dec 7, so 7 was the first place i looked, then off to google for everything else... didn't notice the bonus HESSIAN until reading the comments... the quality of your puzzles are so top-notch even with so much theme content crammed in there! favorite entry is INEEDANAP... it's how i feel all the time
