Meta Prompt
The meta answer is something you won't mind seeing.
Back in August, Wendy came up with what she thought was a cool idea for a meta but, being a neophyte constructor, couldn't figure out how best to put it into action. In a happy coincidence, Cap'n Rick had had the very same idea. They joined forces, and the "Perfect Content" puzzle you see before you is the result.
Thank you to Mark Woychick and Boharr for test-solving, Peter Abide for his suggestions, and Joe Ross for formatting. Wishing all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving -- as always, I am full of gratitude for this unique community.
Nudges:
You haven't solved as of the present moment? No tears! Rick and I will not desert you. (Yes, what you just read is indeed a nudge!)
Our working title for this puzzle was "Project Overlook.

Good job, Hector! Thanks for solving!

      Perfected from its previous incarnation.

I forgot that you test-solved, Bob! My only excuse is that this one went through a LOT of incarnations from its "Project Overlook" days. I added your name to the list. Thanks!
        • boharr 5s · 2023-11-21T00:46:36.896Z
Oh you didn’t need to add me but thank you. You did a great job getting it though those incarnations. I imagine it wasn’t easy.

Ooohhhh that explains why I couldn't figure out how to pronounce and/or parse the title! Nicely done!

Thanks for solving, Hoover! Yes, one of my nudges is going to be "say the title out loud."

Hmm... I must be missing something. I took the title to mean the most ideal substance and saw no reason to question it and it gave me no trouble. Once a saw the metanism, I realized it could also mean to make satisfaction most ideal. However neither interpretation were any issue.

The object of my affection. Or is it my affectation?
I hesitated for a moment I thought there might be two alternates for each, e.g., for BOW, a ship part and a gesture of deference; for ROW, a tiff and a spreadsheet element,; for BASS, a fish and Lance, etc. but there were no ceteras. Thanks.

It sure is, Meg. Fortunately, it provides us constructors with plenty of meta material.

As does 49a, this puzzle rocks! BTW, if anyone is interested to learn about a fun, free Hitchcock movie-watching Zoom group, email me at chris.kochmanski@gmail.com, and I can get you added to the invitation list. No obligation to attend from Tuesday night to Tuesday night — only when the mood or the movie strikes you. A great guy named Marc Strauss runs it; I simply attend. And occasionally make inane comments.

If I construct puzzles half as nice as this, I'd certainly be a content creator!
(Did you hear the one about the crossword tournament? The one who used pen did pretty well, but ultimately the one who used pencil took the lead.)

                            Well, I'm content.
Had a bit of a go with trying to find an entry meaning to bend ones body in reverence, but when I realized it had to begin with an O and had to be in an entry numbered less than 24 it was pretty clear.

Same here! Also I can’t believe that I didn’t know until doing this puzzle that “row” as in quarrel had a different pronunciation.

Whenever you see a British-ism like "row" in a puzzle, you can be pretty sure I am involved.

By the way, I'm a missing some word play in 49A? We use the phrase "rocks" and why joke about a spoiler alert when nothing is spoiled?

Exactly! In fact, when we were working on this I caught the Doobie Brothers (with Michael McDonald) concert at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Great show!

Also, there are a ton of clues that have good words for the theme, so I spent some time looking at all those too! “Club in a Manilow song,” … “Low vocal range” even has two (“low” = a noun or a verb very different meanings, ditto “range,” “club”). This puzzle could have gotten extremely convoluted, just like my tortured thinking!

Thanks, "other" Wendy. 😁 Yes, there are a lot of words with multiple meanings out there, but we restricted ours to heteronyms (i.e. spelled the same but pronounced and used differently). This made construction a bit more difficult but hopefully resulted in a more satisfying puzzle in the end.

Yes - that’s what finally got me off looking at the words with different meanings idea (but same pronunciation).

When I couldn’t figure out the order (EBOTCJ??) and didn’t immediately see an obvious anagram (it’s Monday….), I started looking for a further step, like using the first letter of each pair and finding a 3-letter word that uses those plus one more. Actually worked for several. Then for some reason “double” occurred to me (don’t mind seeing DOUBLE, plus it goes with the center word MEANING) … submitted that but of course, no. Good thing the site lets you try multiple guesses!

Even though I was considering the double meaning of object, I thought there was supposed to be something in front of it that I would get from the verb sense of PERFECT or the adjective sense of CONTENT. 🤣 Was also trying to view mind and/or seeing through the same double lens. In the end I just decided to see if that's all there was. :) Needed google to explain 22A (and needed a couple tries to fill that 22A/23D crossing, having heard of neither). Fun stuff as always, thanks.

At first I asked my friend Hans, who tends goats in Munich (yep, a German shepherd) if he would help me dog down the mechanism to the answer but he kept dogging it so then I asked my cat but he looked me in the puss and said no. Then I asked our bird and I won't even tell you what he gave me! So I just finally got on top of it and that finally made me supremely happy. welp... this one had/has me stumped... i think a major hurdle was that i was trying to use symmetry, though i should have known that wasn't going to work due to the center down entry... i think i did see the major pieces, and i had bject in my notes, so i guess i should have tried object before, but i didn't (and don't) understand how it relates to the prompt (or the title)
seeing all you geniuses and your fantastic puzzles and your myriad ideas, i should really know by now than to try and keep up with y'all... i guess i'm still here trying to maybe learn a tiny morsel of what you superstars can see and put together, and vainly hoping some of that lesson sticks... until then, thanks for everything, sorry for the inconvenience, and wishing one and all a good holiday
