PCC#26 "Encore! Encore!"

· By Philip Chow · Published 2024-02-24T15:58:50.602Z

Meta Prompt
[Level 2] Meta prompt: The answer to the meta is a one-named pop diva that is 7 letters long
Hint #1: Artists sometimes collaborate
Hint #2: In the unlikely event that the artists in the four long entries collaborate, we might get mash-ups like "Hot Stuff Everyday," "I Have Nothing No One," "Sweet but Psycho Chain of Fools," and "Bad Blood Vampire"
Hint #3: Encore! Encore! Don't you just love these pop divas so much you want to hear them again?
Hint #4: Summer Grande = take the D from Donna Summer (who sang "Hot Stuff") and the A from Ariana Grande (who sang "Everyday")... repeat the two letters = DADA
Hint #5: You'll end up with a 4-letter repeated bigram when you extract the first letter from the relevant clues but this doesn't fit the 7-letter answer criterion... the 4-letter name you found is an alternative answer for the clue at 59-Down

Answer explanation: the four long Across answers contain two pop divas... SUMMERGRANDE = Donna Summer + Ariana Grande, HOUSTONKEYS = Whitney Houston + Alicia Keys, MAXFRANKLIN = Ava Max + Aretha Franklin, SWIFTRODRIGO = Taylor Swift + Olivia Rodrigo... Extracting their first initials gives us DA | WA | AA | TO which doesn't amount to much... but taking the hint from the title "Encore! Encore!" we shall repeat these initials: DADA | WAWA | AAAA | TOTO... the first letters of the clues to these grid entries = RIRI, which is Rihanna's nickname (and sometimes appears in crossword puzzles as "[popular Rihanna song]" singer, to fans"), making RIHANNA our meta answer.
Constructor Notes: Easter eggs are planted in the grid such as the 2011 Grammy performance referenced in 59D. I included a few red herrings of other 7-lettered one-named pop divas to throw you off the scent. Happy Birthday to Rihanna on February 20!

      Perfectly constructed!

Nice, but I'm afraid I had to guess. Had the 8 names from the grid but missed the repeat trick. Just don't know enough about my pop diva queens. Now that I understand, I quite like the puzzle -- Thanks, Phil!

thanks! i figured there aren't that many possible answers to begin with that fit the meta prompt: madonna, beyonce, rihanna, shakira, aaliyah, ashanti, britney and whitney for those that refer to them by one name... that's where i had fun with writing clues to add some of their songs: "like a virgin, crazy in love, work, one in a million, oops i did it again"... even shannon made it into the grid with her one-hit wonder
        • KayW 🤓9:01 · 2024-02-25T01:41:39.912Z
Wow! An impressive construction. I suspected it was going to be RIRI as soon as I saw GAGA WAWA DADA in the grid, but it took me some time to work my way through. I'm afraid this dinosaur had to google a couple of those names (sorry MAX and RODRIGO).
          • Philip Chow constructor · 2024-02-25T02:50:16.414Z
yeah... Ava Max and Olivia Rodrigo are not as well-known as the other six - an earlier draft of the puzzle placed the hint#2 song titles next to the long themers so you can google them but it was distracting and probably gave too much away
          • benchen71 🤓8:08 · 2024-02-25T02:25:05.705Z
This is a good puzzle. But in hindsight, you really shouldn't have GAGA in the top left corner. I had trouble getting to AVA MAX (who I have never heard of) because I thought her name would start with a G. (I had overlooked AAAA, you see!)
            • Philip Chow constructor · 2024-02-25T02:53:38.757Z
thanks for solving! yeah the AAAA is kinda ugly since it doesn't look like a repeat pattern as the others do... an earlier draft of this puzzle i tried squeezing in more repetitive 4 letter answers GAGA, NENE, IDID just so solvers won't read the title, scan the grid for repeated letters and then find the solution bypassing the intended path...

Nice! Not my forte but got it all with no nudges. Annoyingly autocorrect suggested I enter Rhianna rather than Rihanna and I figured it knew better than I did.

oh no! sorry that autocorrect let you down but I'm glad you got it!

Nice one! I felt good that I got almost all of the names (except Ava Max) without Google :-)

Interesting puzzle, I got thrown off by the red herrings a little. I got all the repeats but I was looking for two singers whose names fit the first entry, like maybe "Cool structure in the vineyard" = SLICKWINEHOUSE or "Slippery china" = SLICKLENNOX. It was ultimately my bad because I did not go to the clue letters for the ones I DID have, the moment I did that I saw that my original entry MADONNA (based on a WAG and some herrings) was of course wrong.
