A Puzzle Of Firsts (Meta)

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a three-word answer to a question
Why are we so obsessed with being first? I guess it comes from our innate selfishness, something the writers of the New Testament were at pains to counter. As Paul says in Phil 2:3-4, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." It's something we see in Jesus' teaching, too: "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." (Matt. 7:12) OK, that's enough preaching from me. On to the meta, the answer to which is a three-word answer to a question. It's time for a prize! One successful solver will be selected at random and will receive the MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack (which, by the way, is available for purchase here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html). The winner (and purchasers!) will gain access to 14 metas (and a mega-meta!) that will fit nicely into those spare moments over this holiday period.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$10 gives you access to 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game. You won't quite know what to expect: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, sometimes all of those, and sometimes none! One thing is for sure, these are some of the more creative metas my brain has been able to come up with. And there's more: this time there's a mega-meta!

My first Google came up with A BRAVE MAN. The Google hierarchy failed me! The answer was several entries down but I found it. Both are true but only BOLD is the accurate attribution.

And there you have it. I think most of us have heard BRAVE. Now what about the first egg, or even more so, lobster!! (See that cockroach looking thing on the bottom of the seabed….let’s eat it!!!)

Nice kickoff for the year. I think most of us may have seen it immediately because of the prompt, I was surprised you didn’t make it the second (given the release date). Interesting that in the research for the correct statement ( I always thought it was BRAVE not BOLD) I found that maybe I should have answered “Ancient South African”

Well Swift may have missed it completely… I suspect it was a WOMAN wading around in the shallows, thinking “he may not bring back that beast and I need to get dinner on the table … let’s see if these are edible.” Also, J.O.C. - love them!!

Even though I knew that SADly it would be right in front of me, it took me a few before I picked it out. My bunny butt was seeing WORLD WAR crossing at the top and remembering that the FIRST was referenced in the clue for 32D. It's always something! But thanks, Ben -- Great beginning!

It took way longer than it should have. Good puzzle.

Wowza! What an incredible construction. I needed the nudges to find the question, but I'm amazed you could put that together. Thanks, Ben.

Apparently not at all! But it was more than I could chew. Too bad as this is, of course, the type of meta everyone looks for. Pity I simply didn't see it when it can. Great puzzle and great quote!

First nudge reminded me to try the mechanism that had occurred to me overnight, which worked right away.
However, it took me three tries because I managed to find incorrect citations on the internet: First was BRAVE SOUL, and then was BRAVE MAN, and then I finally found multiple citations of BOLD MAN. Perhaps I need a remedial course in internet search methodology...

Maybe I should have accepted a few of the variants. But "A BOLD MAN" was the original quote, as far as I could tell!

Getting to this very late due to busy travel time, but solved almost immediately without hints. Pretty impressive construction given the constraints, though that little corner in the SW was tricky. :) Fun one, thanks.

I was absolutely assuming everyone would need to google "U+2404"! And crossing that with a cricket clue? Almost unforgivable! ;-)
