Checkmate (Chris Barbee)

· By DrTom · Published 2023-07-19T11:30:48.350Z

Meta Prompt
Satisfaction comes from both the meta answer and the meta title
I asked Chris Barbee if he could help us out with a MEOW and almost before you knew it he had this beauty. It is a bit tricky (how it gets it's Calico+ rating) but certainly doable; plus the AHA is a chuckle. Oh, and in case you are wondering, it has nothing to do with Ben's CHECKMATE MEOW from last week, it is just that great minds think alike!😊

Nudges will be posted late Friday or early Saturday
Reveal will be on Tuesday AM
OK, Nudges...
Nudge 1] The Title, The Title, The Title...what is it telling you to look for?
Nudge 2] Clue 1A was intended to be a "foothold". It probably would have been better if it did not have the "you" at the end
The REVEAL!!!!
Checking for mate inside clues (as 1A was intended to nudge) shows that clues 14, 21, 37, 41, 49 and 72 all have "mate" hidden in their text. The first letters of the answers to those clues spell out JAGGER. That, in what was hoped to be a funny "AHA", was the source of "Satisfaction".

Nice one! You can't always get what you want, but I was able to get the answer to this meta without too much trouble!

Well since you are where you are perhaps time was on your side? Nice job Ben!
    • Meg 2s · 2023-07-19T13:37:36.850Z
The grid was a bit of a beast, but the meta was no burden. Thanks, Chris!

That gird harder than herding wild horses, but in the end I got satisfaction.

Apparently, time was on my side on this one. Got it fairly quickly. Nice puzzle, Chris!

Nice one! For the record, the Devo version of the song is way better.

Since I can't put this on the forum yet, I'll have to say it here -- This honky tonk woman is out of the cathouse! Tough grid but satisfactory finish! Thanks, Chris!

If you ask me, the entry for 69d should have been SUGAR. Thanks, Chris!

It's a gas, gas, gas! Although I really thought that the unusual long words in the grid (SESTERCES, INSENSATE, PROPHESIERS) would have something to do with it, so despite 1A I took a while before looking at the clues :-)
                  • Tyrpmom 2s · 2023-07-20T02:48:35.341Z
Glad to see I’m not the only one who struggled with the grid. Fun meta.

Took me a while to check for mates, maybe been away from home too long!! Long answers were definitely a distraction but finally twisted them around to satisfaction!
                      • HeadinHome 🤓5:12 · 2023-07-20T14:14:57.983Z
SOOOO many “IN’s” in the cluing, including the word “contINer” in 68D, which distracted me for such a long time! (and “drINk IN casINo royale” and “dust IN the wINd”… and “INmate” seems significant because it contains IN as well as MATE, from the title). Needed a nudge to re-focus, and the perfect nudge was “think of the title as 2 words.” aHA - that means “look for mates for ‘check’” (nope) or “check out MATE” (yep). Now I see the little flag wave at clue 55D too! (jagged). ( :

Well interestingly enough, that was not intended to be an "Easter Egg". I helped Chris by testing this one and neither of us saw that. The "foot hold" clue was supposed to be 1A which he hoped would get you to look inside clues. Still, serendipity is a wonderful thing!
                          • Sharkicicles 2s · 2023-07-21T18:00:13.166Z
FWIW, 1A helped but my foothold into the meta was the clue for 21A, since it was definitely not a clue for ACTOR I've seen before. The "ma te" stuck out and then it was off to the races.

Ah HA! Very good! I got hung up for a while on the SECRET crossing SESTERCES, which is a bizarre crossword answer and has SECRET backwards finishing it... PERI also has a similar cross with RIPER in the bottom middle. Those felt too strange to ignore... nope! Ignore! Hah.

That mechanism throws me every time! You'd think I'd learn. I was afraid I'd need to know how to play chess.

argh i had the right idea but i missed 37a so my bottle of jager couldn't give me any satisfaction (i should have realized how to extend it from the prompt, but i am too dense)... also the puzzle had stumped me too, so... i really should learn to leave you geniuses well enough alone

Egad this took forever, even with the nudges. Finally saw it on like the 10th go-round. Glad I stuck it out, real salt of the earth stuff. Thanks. :)
