Garden Redesign

· By Wendy Walker · Published 2024-08-04T11:00:59.974Z

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a flower.
Good morning and welcome to this week's SSS. Those of us who are lucky enough to have flower gardens know that they require a lot of year-round attention: planting, pruning, deadheading, watering, fertilizing, mulching ... the list goes on. And then sometimes you see a neighbor's garden and you decide to make some changes in your own plot. Change can be a good thing when it comes to flowers. And should you ever need some assistance with finding excellent plants, I suggest visiting the White Flower Farm's website (whiteflowerfarm.com). Thank you to @Cap'n Rick and to @ajk for test-solving and suggestions and, as always, to @Joe Ross for his technical advice. Nudges later today!

    Thanks Wendy! I made a mistake with the 4th letter but corrected a letter before submitting. I don't know what other flower is pal_y. Darrow / Yarrow - > D. hAsta / hOsta -> A. astIr / aster -> I. paLsy / paNsy -> L??? sYlvia / salvia -> Y.

      same

I think this is an "apply the mechanism to the result you get" meta.
Your result is DAILY a legitimate word. Change a letter and you get DAISY.
        • LarsCaine 🤓14:45 · 2024-08-04T18:23:23.975Z
Yeah, I got that after I posted. Thanks
      • Eric Porter 2s · 2024-08-05T01:23:54.386Z
After seeing the other comments, yes, I should have realized that DAILY needs a redesign. I did that without even thinking about what I was doing. Haha

Beautiful, Wendy! I can't tell you how long I sat on DAILY/YOENA And even though I tried to think of a way to make a flower out of PAL?Y to get DAISY, It took me awhile to get the idea that we should just make one final redesign. Coincidentally, an acquaintance of mine's daughter is having baby twin girls induced today. Their names will be Lily and Daisy

I had 4/5 letters, so made an educated guess. Like Eric, I also have no clue on the 4th plant
            • Tom Wilson 5:51 · 2024-08-04T13:42:48.291Z
I originally worked from the "new" set of letters - YOENA - then switched one of them to get "peony." Once I saw "Shasta" in the grid, I figured I was in "right church, wrong pew" territory. Thanks, as always, Wendy!
              • woozy 🤓8:47 · 2024-08-04T17:07:51.013Z
How did "Shasta" (my favorite mountain) play into your thinking?
                • Tom Wilson 5:51 · 2024-08-06T03:08:42.304Z
The Shasta daisy is the one I'm most familiar with, and I think it got its name from that snowy mountain!

Shasta was a fortuitous Easter egg!

Haven't figured out the trick to letter #4 yet, but no matter -- lovely looking puzzle! Thanks, Wendy!
                  • kurtalert 🤓4:13 · 2024-08-04T15:28:25.587Z
I'm pretty sure it's: Darrow hAsta astIr paNsy sYlvia
This gives you DAINY... which, just like the theme answers, needs 1 letter changed to turn into DAISY.
                    • woozy 🤓8:47 · 2024-08-04T17:10:04.386Z
The original entry is paLsy so taking the original letters gives you DAILY, a legitimate five letter word. "Apply the mechanism to the result" gives us a replace the L with and S....
                      • whimsy 🤓9:17 · 2024-08-04T17:37:41.366Z
Aha -- play it again, Sam -- should have figured. And hey, daily is pretty much the attention those picky things want!
                        • kurtalert 🤓4:13 · 2024-08-05T03:26:39.238Z
Oops, yes, meant to write paLsy. But, still, either way you end up with DAI*Y and have to change one letter to get to DAISY.
                    • Bird Lives 5s · 2024-08-04T14:50:35.051Z
Like Tom Wilson (above) I saw that YOENA is one letter-change and a flower (re)arrangement from PEONY, but I quickly abaondoned that rabbit hole. The one that hooked me was DA[Y L]ILY. I kept looking for some subtle hint in the clues or grid that wouulc account for the missing YL.
Great way to start off Sunday morning, feeling fresh as a . . . well, whatever.

Like others I'm a little confused - can someone explain how you get the S? PALSY becomes PANSY, so I was staring and DAILY and could not figure out how to turn it into a flower. Is there a flower that goes PAL_Y?
                          • woozy 🤓8:47 · 2024-08-04T17:12:40.209Z
"Apply the mechanism to the result" Just as Darrow, hAsta, astIr, paLsy and sYlvia become Yarrow, hOsta, paNsy and sAlvia, we also have daiLy becomes daiSy.
                            • ajk 🤓4:44 · 2024-08-04T17:20:47.019Z
I think the idea is that you do the mechanism one more time--so the word DAILY becomes DAISY, as DARROW became YARROW, etc.
                              • Wendy Walker constructor · 2024-08-05T01:02:35.064Z
Exactly -- thanks for explaining, AJK! You derive DAILY from the original letters that you need to change -- and then you repeat the process to turn an "ordinary" word into a flower name.

I spent forever working with YOENA trying to change one letter at a time. POENA is that a flower. No, its the greek goddess of punishment (and the origin of the word subpoena). Is there some left to right order. POENY? Entered that a few times (just in case I made a typo the first two times). I'm an urn rather than two faces guy so took forever for me to realize to look at the letters being replaced.
When I did, a transcription error gave my DAISY instead of DAILY so glided over the "replace a letter" aspect but I already had that in mind with all that YOENA non-sense.

Yes, I originally tried to do it using the replacement letters rather than the replaced ones but it just worked out so much better this way. Thanks for solving, Woozy!

Even given that I test solved it still took some work to get the three I've never heard of (well, never before test solving 😂). I did get PANSY this time around though, so I'm improving. :) I then also got stuck between PEONY and using DAILY. Wanted the latter, but couldn't come up with a flower that fit for a while 😂😂😂 (did I mention I'm bad at flowers 😂)

I jumped the gun trying for a quick solve, combining the clue for 16A and the entry for ASTIR. I finally dug a little deeper in the garden and weeded out all of the invasive letters to find the answer. Very fun.
