Don't Get Fancy With Me

Meta Prompt
What you also don't want people to get with you
Man when they say "It takes a village" they MUST be talking about creating Metas. I started this one as an idea hit me one day MANY months ago and finally got it finished and clued. I sent it out for testing and it needed work, so I polished it and sent it back and it still needed work. Even when most all my testers said, "it should work" there were still those who said, "yes but..." and thank you to them. Lots of eyes have already seen this one: Cinny, whimsy, edestlin and schmidzy. I could never have gotten this whipped into shape without them but schmidzy was particularly unrelenting in wanting me to put out the best product possible. So, this should be pretty honed, and if it is not, then it is no fault of theirs.
The meta answer is what you also don't want people to get with you. I would say this is a good solid Persian:
Kitten
Calico
֎PERSIAN
Puma
Lion
Though obviously your mileage may differ.
Nudges will be Friday unless there seems to be a lot of people in the dark.

NUDGES:
Nudge 1] Most people do exactly what I tell them not to do, that would be a good idea with this meta’s title
Nudge 2] Usually “fancying” things up muddies their true intent, but not with this puzzle
Nudge 3] Symmetry, symmetry, symmetry
Nudge 4] Sometimes it may be helpful to think more like a Brit when you are being fancy
Nudge 5] That is particularly true when you are thinking about 49A. What is another name for a masquerade ball in Manchester (the British one, not the New Hampshire one)
Last Minute Nudge] Just to make sure that I got my point across I started and ended with a theme answer!

REVEAL:
There were five words in the grid that you could add "FANCY" to and get a different meaning of the word:
1A FANCY Dress = COSTUME
15A FANCY That = REALLY
38A FANCY Car = ULTIMA
63A FANCY Free = DISTANT
67A FANCY Pants = ELITE
The first letter of those alternates words, in the order of the original words, spells CRUDE, the meta answer.

Nice one, DrT! I caught what was going on, but I wasn't confident which were the corresponding answers... the middle one was the most obvious, but I had to Google a few expressions and then a bit of back solving to find them all.
    • hoover 3s · 2024-10-02T17:46:09.678Z
For the middle one, did you go with the 53A entry or the 17A clue? If we're finding clues that match, 53A doesn't fit, and 17A sorta does (it's fancier than a Civic, anyway).
      • Darth 🤓13:36 · 2024-10-04T00:24:45.443Z
Well, 53A jumped out as a supercar. I looked up the fancy phrases (as they are familiar to my ear but not in my normal usage) to see if I could find synonyms. I had already assumed COSTUME fit into it and found DISTANT... so with symmetry came up with CRUD... I then assumed E is from ELITE? Maybe I'm wrong.

I fancy being a Brit gave me a slight edge on this one, for once! Fun one DrT!

With my memory, it is always a challenge to see if I can solve one that I have already tested. This was fun even the second time around. Thanks, Dr Tom.

            Cute. Just the right hint.
            But what is the D?

              DISTANT

There has a to be a crude joke here about striking someone's fancy, but I can't quite come up with it. Nice puzzle.

Damn - got stumped for quite a while on FANCY THAT - I saw it defined as "hard to imagine" and I connected that to "As if" which is clued as "Unlikely!" - which is the same thing as Hard to Imagine. So I was at CAUDE, which had me convinced that there was a next step beyond... doh!

It took a while and then Mr. Google to realize the connection between "fancy dress" and Manchester. Good one.

Yes, anyone with any Brit connection got that Fancy Dress means costume, not really gowns and tuxedos. Having an English background and living htere for a few years helped me in designing the puzzle. Glad Mr. G finally saw his was behind the mask.

Hit it on the 4th try… first tried CUTE (had just the C and E at that point). No go. Then tried SMART (don’t get smart with me) just as a WAG. Then tried RUDE because I had figured out Ultima for “fancy car”, and had spotted FREE (“fancy free”) which the clue for DISTANT matched… so now I had ?UDE (CUDE not being a word so figured I must be wrong about the C). When RUDE was rejected I tried CRUDE just for fun, and when that worked I finally back solved for the R at “fancy that”. This puzzle really is cleaner than I made it… maybe my problem was I was looking only at the obvious spots for too long (first, center, and last entries), not in the rest of the fill. I also overthought the title for a long time, thinking we would be looking for NON-fancy versions of the fancy things since it says DON’T get fancy … found “A Line” in the clue for 38D (“try out a line”) and thought a simple dress might be an A-line dress?? So what’s a very simple car? Simple pants? So spent a long time looking for other things in the clues (cart? jeans?) in the clues.

Well I am glad you kept at it, and that you enjoyed it.

Very late to the puzzle, but saw the method instantly upon completion (the DRESS clue obv stood out from the start, even without the PANTS one). From there it was just hunting for the other FANCY x entries. Found CAR and then eventually THAT/FREE. Took a few beats to match those last two to the alts (when I had C-U-E I was thinking it might be CUTE for a bit, but the symmetry would have been ruined). Eventually got there. About 15-20 min all in, including the grid. Fun one, thanks. :)

I had hoped by starting with a themer that I would get everyone on the right path, and by ending with one, well that was just icing. Thanks for solving Alan.
