As a long-time trumpet player, I've never played MANHATTANBEACH and had to look at a list of marches to confirm, but after dodging the BEACH-in-the-themer, Beach-in-a-clue rabbit hole, I stared at the themers again and SEMPERFIDELIS + WASHINGTONPOST, plus the BRASS nudge, is what did it. And now I just looked back and saw RIGHTLEFT, and it occurred to me that ELCAPITAN is another one. Thanks for putting so many hints in there!

At Michigan, back in the day, we had a steady diet of Karl King.
100% from the title for me, as I am woefully ignorant of the titles of these classic marching band songs.

I did the grid to confirm my thoughts upon seeing the title. It was fun and breezy -- apparently Jay and I know a lot of the same folks. And I just happened to find out an interesting factoid that the constructor is probably saving for his reveal chatter, so I'll pass on letting the cat out of the bag in that respect! Thanks for this one, Jay!

As a parent of a West Point grad, I have attended many events where The Washington Post March is announced and played. That was the way in for me.

Love when I learn something on these… no idea there was a march called Washington Post… I’ll assume that piece and the publication have nothing to do with each other. Nicely constructed!

It was actually commissioned by the Washington Post back in the day

The newspaper is in fact the source of the title! The Washington Post (March) has its own Wikipedia page, including a musical excerpt that you will likely recognize, that tells the story.

Just looked at that article and listened -- how many times have I heard that and didn't know its title. Also saw that the two-step was actually CALLED the Washington Post (dance) when it first was popular. !
whoa, had no idea of the title of that piece. Not exactly an aficionado of such things, but still. I've heard that one enough that I'm surprised I didn't learn the name by accident at least
Boomer advantage! Being of a certain age, part of a military family and being in the military myself, I have heard ALL of the marches. There was even a movie (other than Stars and Stripes Forever) on TV about him back in the 70's I think. The Washington Post March is probably one of my favorites, just as the Washington Post Crossword is.... (though I think I may like the march more)
Very enjoyable (even if I dont know how to spell "philip" apparently). I'm not too familiar with Manhattan beach and I may have missed it but for the title and the Right Left clue. Those were enough. When "john phillip sousa" was rejected, it was enough for me to think "But it has to be.

The title also did it for me and I loved seeing the marches appear! Thanks

Many many moons ago, I led the marching band at a Junior ROTC high school, so we knew plenty o' Sousa. Made this one easy as putting one foot in front of the other!
I intuited the answer from the title and some of those "left, right" and "brass" hints. Still I wanted to find some kind of metanism to extract the letters to spell out a 5-letter surname, but I couldn't see it. Google "March Air" and you get a military reserve. Google the man and you find the themers right in plain view. haha

I had no idea that particular piece of music was called “The Washington Post March.” thanks Jay!

Fun and breezy indeed. Took me a second, but then it became obvious. Thanks for the puzzle, Jay!
Right, left is a combination not a punch but that didn't spoil a most fun puzzle for me, thanks!

You're right, although YouTube does offer tutorials like "How to Throw a One-Two Punch," presumably by someone who knows something about boxing. I've corrected the clue here in Crosshare. Unfortuanately, I cannot change the .puz and .pdf, where my ignorance will be permanently on display.

Stars and Stripes on the Fourth of July will always be my favorite Sousa march but I knew these as well!

Fun one, Jay. And I never KNEW the name of that one was the Washington Post March! Live (or solve metas) and learn. Thanks!
Dave C 8s · 2024-03-07T01:08:18.215Z
The title made me think of him and Google confirmed it.
I don't know if there was some other mechanism - I just remembered that Sousa wrote a piece called The Washington Post March and figured: he's the march guy
lol should have followed through on my idea to look for marches, but never would have expected there to be one called the WASHINGTON POST Badly needed that nudge, thanks!

I may well recognize the music, but not something I grew up with having only been in the US for ~20 years. Plus I got totally sidetracked by two down clues beginning with capitalized “LI” as in “L-Ike” - along with the “I-LIKE” grid entry!
