    Solution: WRONG WAY
Answer Explanation: In TLC's song "Waterfalls"... the first two lines of the chorus is "Don't go chasin' waterfalls / Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to"... There are 8 entries whose clues contain a well-known river or lake... in grid order, they are: YOUTH (the Seine (river)), ASP (the Nile (river)), WWE (Mississippi River), GAYBAR (Lake Victoria), NNE (Lake Tahoe), ORDERS (Amazon River), REAIRS (Lake Superior), WARN (Yellow River)... the first letters spell out YAWGNORW... this seems like gibberish but if we read it from bottom to top we spell out WRONG WAY
Red Herrings (these are the fake answers that you get by chasing waterfalls and not heeding TLC's advice):
    (1) STOP is spelled out from the four entries whose clues contain the word "waterfall"... in grid order: SALMON, TLC, OUTPOURED, POSE
    (2) SLOW DOWN is spelled out from the four down entries with the string HHO (hinted at by the chemical formula for water H2O)... the first letters of the entries spell SLOW and the first letters of the clues spell DOWN... in grid order: SLEUTHHOUND, LUNCHHOUR, OVERWITHHOLDS, WASHHOUSE
    (3) DEAD END is spelled out from the starts of the clues whose down entries contain the EAU rebus (hinted at French for water)... in grid order: MOREAU, CHATEAU, THOREAU, LEBEAU, GATEAU, PLATEAU, BUREAU
    (4) NO ENTRY is spelled out from the starts of the clues whose across entries contain the O where the down EAU rebus occurs... in grid order: IONS, VOICEMAIL, ONTOE, WELLNO, OUTPOURED, IKIDYOUNOT, EMOTES

"Waterfalls" (TLC song) was released on May 22, 1995 from their second album CrazySexyCool... it's full of meaning and it's very sad... but it's so damn catchy... check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WEtxJ4-sh4

I thought I had avoided all of the red herrings, but alas neau. Incredible construction!

thanks! i'm curious which one did you fall victim to? i feel like an evil dr moreau planting so many traps bwahaha 😈

            I caught red herrings 2 & 3. Didn't see #4. Fell for the most obvious- #1

Thanks for solving - omg how do you solve so fast?! sub 7 min... that's faster than it takes me to solve a regular sized puzzle
            • Sendhil Revuluri 🤓6:59 · 2024-05-21T16:45:43.219Z
Lucky for me the timer is not counting on solving the mini… it would need an hours (and maybe a days) field!

Great to have a fun meta on a non-Mikey Saturday. Chapo!
            • Philip Chow constructor · 2024-05-21T15:21:06.175Z
Chapeau (interjection): Used to express admiration, approval, or respect; ‘I take my hat off’; ‘well done’
^this term is completely new to me... chapo is mexican slang for "shorty," costa rican slang for "dum-dum" (foolish person not the lollipop), and the nickname of an infamous drug lord (with "el")... was trying to figure out which one you were calling me 😂
            • DrTom 4s · 2024-05-18T19:11:03.763Z
Well I fell in every trap there was, NO ENTRY, STOP, etc. Finally I did what I was told and looked at the lyrics, then I remembered NILE and MISSISSIPPI and SEINE so after that it was just a case of looking for things. Yellow was hidden nicely, but I remember thinking "Yellow Card" should not be capitalized. Masterful construction even if the fill was a real level 4 rapids. Thanks for the challenge Phil
              • Philip Chow constructor · 2024-05-21T15:27:47.826Z
yes glad you caught on! I intentionally capitalized Yellow Card for it to stand out since I figured it would probably be the least well-known of the eight
                • DrTom 4s · 2024-05-22T00:39:02.048Z
Wow, this puzzle gets better the more I read. I only got 2 of the 4 herrings, didn't even notice the others. NICE job!!!!
                • Tyrpmom 6s · 2024-05-19T00:00:32.182Z
I only missed no entry. Resorted to looking at the hints. Had TLC from the crosses so I never read that clue. Lazy meta solving. Oh well. I’m amazed that you packed all that in there. WOW!
                  • Philip Chow constructor · 2024-05-21T15:34:13.172Z
a tale of two test-solvers: one immediately honed in on the TLC clue got it pretty quickly... another had to check the hints since they missed the TLC clue... so i guess this puzzle does play out very differently hinging on just a single clue 😛
                  • whimsy 🤓23:29 · 2024-05-19T02:25:24.186Z
This was terrific, Phil! I actually really enjoyed the red herrings --disappointed that I only got 2 out of the 4 -- DEAD END and NO ENTRY. Then the hunt was on for the real source -- and the direction of the flow. And I didn't peek! Amazing all the alternatives you managed to fit in there! Thanks for the multiplicity of challenges and fun!

glad you had fun :) i was wondering if there was a way to require solvers to find all the red herrings... i like the blinking O/EAU rebuses that crosshare displays after the solve... they kind of look like blinky warning lights!

Thanks!! Normally when I edit puzzles I try to weed out potential red herrings but I thought what if I warn solvers ahead of time? 😜
