The answer to the meta is the name of a movie very subtly hinted at in the 15-letter entries
It's time for another Halloween-themed meta puzzle. This time, we're playing "Name The Horror Movie". The answer to the meta is the name of a horror movie very subtly hinted at in the 15-letter entries. (But I've provided a couple of different ways to get to the meta answer, so don't just focus exclusively on those 15-letter entries.) Answer & explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=146865#p146865
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

Not a horror movie fan. I Googled "Horror Movie Jason, Jack, Bill and Alice" and there it was. I can see how it would be a better aha moment if I were a fan of the movie series.
Dave C 3s · 2023-10-31T13:56:20.342Z
The 3 long entries didn't help me - maybe because I haven't seen the movie, but the four characters in the corners did it.
rjy 2s · 2023-10-31T14:31:12.447Z
Same as others - Jason and then the other corners gave the answer. Curious about the long entries…
Carolyn 3s · 2023-10-31T15:17:49.672Z
Not a fan of horror, so I'd never seen it. I also googled the four names, then checked out the 13th letter and voila! Cool!
I think you're the first person to comment on that confirming detail! ;-)
JHSeeman 2s · 2023-10-31T15:15:42.414Z
FUN FACT: first R rated movie I saw. (was 14 at the time).
Four corners was a dead give away.
From my perspective the subtle clues were
Runs in family - yeah, definitely some family issues....original movie was Jason's mom laying waste to a bunch of teenagers (kevin bacon among them). Then continued with Jason
Catches unawares - yeah, sneaks up on folks....watch kevin bacon's death....
Didn't get the head straight for....aside from a possible mask reference.
Fun one Ben.
Good one for Halloween! It’s been a while since I’ve watched it! I used the names in the 4 corners to arrive at the answer.

Proud of myself for getting FRI. I often miss such things.
MatthewL 🤓8:33 · 2023-10-31T18:28:04.624Z
Jason plus 26D (Unlucky number is 13) is what did it for me. Nice one, Ben!
ReB 4s · 2023-11-01T01:02:33.404Z
Same shortcut for me. I found some confirmation in several other grid entries (other corner names, 46A, 30A) and took a stab at the answer. I'm sure I missed much of the elegance.
Laura M 🤓8:45 · 2023-10-31T19:58:53.791Z
Nice! But I couldn't have gotten the main path through the long entries without the names leading me to suspect the answer first.
I wouldn't call it the main path to the solution; it's more of a definitive confirmation.
merlinnimue 🤓9:46 · 2023-10-31T20:20:45.329Z
1a is Jason, so that must mean... wait, it can't be that simple, can it? Can it? (I only figured out the real metanism after submitting)
So much fun, thank you... as always wishing I had a small fraction (say a thirteenth?) of your talents
whimsy 16:29 · 2023-10-31T20:59:45.289Z
Never saw the movies but four names in corners were a handy google strategy. I found I did know the title when it showed up and that Jason (and the mask business) did ring a bell in retrospect. What can I say; I'm culturally deprived. Thanks, Ben -- for making sure that at least I'm not puzzle-deprived!
Didn't even grok the names, thought of Friday the 13th and checked the 13th letters and sure enough. Thought it was odd to make a whole meta out of three letters; nice to come here and see the layers I missed.
Bird Lives 3s · 2023-11-01T14:08:42.362Z
I suspected the answer at 1A. (never having seen the movie, i got no help from the other corners). The 13th letters of the themers were confirmation. I never would have noticed them had I not already gotten the answer.
I have to say I was going to WAG it as HALLOWEEN given the release date of the puzzle, but you cannot ignore the Friday the 13th franchise with a puzzle that starts with JASON and has JACK, BILL, and ALICE for good measure. Now, there were a lot of herrings, I'm sure unintended, but: (1) Mask - OK, immediate HALLOWEEN reference as well as Friday the 13th (2) graphic of Kitchen knife, a Michael Myers staple (3) RUNS IN THE FAMILY - Michael did pretty much eliminate the family, but moreover he stabbed (ran in) his family (sister) (4) 55A Castle there is an actor named Castle that plays Michael Myers in the mask and a character named Castle in the Halloween film. (5) NIGHT (or rather NUIT) symmetrical with MASK since Michael Myers only kills on Halloween Night. I'd bet a lot of first tries were Halloween? (I was hoping the long entries would be 13 letters to nail it down, but JASON and the character names were so strong that I had to go with Friday the 13th, obviously missing that the thirteenth letters were FRI)
For some reason I didn't notice JASON, and even though I've seen the movie it was long enough ago that the other names wouldn't mean anything. Spent some time trying to remove LUCK from stuff, but that went nowhere. Needed nudge 3 to point me to the names, and then quickly saw F R I. Another one hiding in plain sight that I just didn't see for some reason. :)
