Over My Head

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a novel.
Secretive upstairs neighbors! Mysterious upheavals in the wee hours, waking up the entire household! And an overwhelming sense that something's being hushed up. This classic novel, which shows up on many required reading lists, is chock-full of strange goings-on. My sister (now a college English professor) introduced me to this book when I was a teenager, and for my 50th birthday she bought me a copy of the first American edition, which I treasure. The image above shows the beautiful marbled cover of that volume.
Thank you, Cap'n Rick and Damefox, for your invaluable assistance with this one.
Mid-day nudges: Did you notice that eight clues are unnecessarily lengthy? Why might that be?
Right! They are all characters in the book. [At this point you can Google -- or you can solve this in the intended way.]
Pretend Mike Shenk wrote this puzzle. (Yeah, right, Wendy; as if!) How might you interpret the title, literally?
Another clue is the preponderance of a two-letter word, or part of a word, in all of the parenthetical descriptions. What is it?
That's right: UP. Now how could you apply it to the HEAD of the themers?

    !!!!
Love it. I was sure it was Jane Eyre but then the clues kept including things I didn't recognize. But it was easy to confirm.

Thanks, Woozy! Glad you enjoyed it.

Some people might get this without finishing the grid, but I had to google all the names because I don't think I've ever read it.
      • Wendy Walker constructor · 2024-10-13T17:10:57.834Z
Yeah, definitely Google-able. Glad you solved!

Didn't need to finish the grid, but I did because it was fun. Thanks.

Well, that's an endorsement if I've ever heard one! Thanks!

I like the cryptic title. Without it, I'd have missed the metanism. ;)
          • woozy 🤓10:43 · 2024-10-13T14:29:35.753Z
Oh, for goodness sake! There was a metatnism! (I was going to ask but I thought that'd be rude). And not only that it was basically the metatnism I thought it'd be but couldn't find on my own. What a fun puzzle that keeps giving.

And did you notice how the indicator "up" appears in all the parenthetical descriptions, as well as several sentences in the intro?

I did figure it out from the description, but it was lovely to see all the deep cuts in the clues! <3

Yes, but as soon as I got the answer that way, I stopped solving, so I missed the elegance, for which I needed the nudges.

Yep, that's entirely legit, but you also could have solved without Google just by using the "Over" and "Head" indicators on the themers. Thanks for solving, Matthew!

“There is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow-creatures, and feeling that your presence is an addition to their comfort." Solving the SSS is a close second, though! Thanks, Wendy!

Fun. Easy for me but only because my son and his buddies made an accurate but campy video based on the novel 20 years ago. Their teacher still shows it to her students each year.

Directly up my alley. I think I could have done this one without the parenthetical info nudging me… this one’s been a fave for a long time (and the various film adaptations). What a gift that edition was that she gave you!
                                      • Wendy Walker constructor · 2024-10-14T11:41:43.676Z
They were certainly superfluous for us super-fans, but I had a lot of fun writing those descriptions and getting the word "up" into each one!

I am ashamed to admit that this meta was harder for me than some, I’m more a Steinbeck fan. I guess I’ll have to read the book not just watch the production. Given all the rave reviews of the book by fellow muggles I’d best get to it.
