Meta Prompt
The answer is a word found in the next theme entry.
Good morning Muggles, and welcome to Muggle Meta Monday!
Well, this is it; the final installment of my four-puzzle Detective Suite (after “Elementary, My Dear Watson,” “A Figure in Hiding” and “Watching the Detectives”). The topic of the suite was one of my favorites, fictional detectives.
This one is fairly straightforward, and is probably in the Week 1-ish realm of difficulty, although you may need the help of your sidekick, Mr. G.
Oh… and did I mention that this suite also has a mega-meta answer? Well, it does, so keep track of the puzzles as you solve them. And now, sharpen your pencils and your wits… the game is afoot!

The bottom row was a big help.

When all else fails, google the relevant words. 😂 Thanks for a fun series.
      • hoover 3s · 2024-08-19T22:17:25.549Z
yep, and when googling all eight of the words doesn't work, go back and google only the relevant ones, except before you can finish typing them in, you realize what they all have in common...

Ah, all praise to Sue Grafton, who has provided constructors with cluing angles for numerous *IS and *ISFOR entries!

FIgured we'd get Sue Grafton at some point. Thanks for the puzzle, Al! And for the whole series. Has been a lot of fun.

It jumped out at me since I have read all the Sue Grafton books in the series. It might be more difficult for those not familiar with the series.

Anyone have a nudge, tip, lead, or pointer for the mega?

This is probably one of those where there are things in the Crosshare queue that just haven't posted yet, so I'll just say that as I write this there are no visible replies. 😂 Anyway, my only hint would be that it's probably simpler than you think.

Ah - nice! Yes, I needed Google- but I knew right away which series this was from (just because of Crosswords - maybe I should read them?) I just needed to know what E meant in her books.

I was going to say E is for Evidence it the only Sue Grafton novel I read ... but then I realized it was actually F is for fugitive that I had read.

Thanks for the fun puzzles, Al! And thanks for making them accessible even to those of us who don't know much about fictional detectives.

DOH! I tried everything, taking the next letter, taking letters between sequential letters...I knew it had to be E and then it struck me how many times I have made use of the MIS or EIS or WIS when filling a grid. Beautifully SAD. NOw I have ot go back and do the others; I've solved them I jsut cannot remember them at the moment. Great puzzle Al.
