It jumped out at me since I have read all the Sue Grafton books in the series. It might be more difficult for those not familiar with the series.

Ah - nice! Yes, I needed Google- but I knew right away which series this was from (just because of Crosswords - maybe I should read them?) I just needed to know what E meant in her books.

I was going to say E is for Evidence it the only Sue Grafton novel I read ... but then I realized it was actually F is for fugitive that I had read.

DOH! I tried everything, taking the next letter, taking letters between sequential letters...I knew it had to be E and then it struck me how many times I have made use of the MIS or EIS or WIS when filling a grid. Beautifully SAD. NOw I have ot go back and do the others; I've solved them I jsut cannot remember them at the moment. Great puzzle Al.
