Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a 4-digit number.
I love to travel. To date, I've experienced over 40 countries and all 50 U.S. states, with many repeat visits. As a young boy, I enjoyed traveling from MI to AK each summer with my family. One year we took a train from Chicago's Union Station to Seattle, a 2200-mile journey covering 7 states that afforded spectacular views of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain wilderness. From then on, I was eager to see the world -- much like George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life" who said, “You know what the three most exciting sounds in the world are?... Anchor chains, plane motors and train whistles!”
While enthusiasm for trains and travel is not needed for this crossword puzzle, paying attention to the scenery is always important for solving a meta. Here's a tip to help you reach your final destination: Certain sets of numbers (and Google!) will prove useful, but no math is needed.
... Now, all aboard! Enjoy the journey!

Definitely needed Google, but fun journey down the rails!

Thanks. My original version just asked for a state, which made the meta accessible but also too easy to jump tracks and guess the answer. ;)

Clever puzzle! Googled State admission to Union years and got the alternate grid answers for the clues ( PAPER & INKS, TEST & DEMO, etc). But then couldn’t find another 4 -letter grid entry with state initials. 1890 was when Idaho and Wyoming (IDWY) were admitted so I thought 69a DIDI? After other guesses were wrong. Lol! Have no idea why 1890 is right. Thanks, Darth!

Lol. I suppose you could try all 50 states until you hit on something. There are 5 sets that make up those 4-letter words (INKS, DEMO, etc.)... List them in grid order and see if you notice something.... ;)

I loved solving this mystery… what the heck do those numbers refer to?? Why are there two giant black and white animals in this puzzle? What does railways have to do with any of this?? I kind of was expecting something about Promontory Point Utah (the “station” connecting the trans-cont.). Great fun!
                  • Darth constructor · 2024-03-25T17:50:25.645Z
Lol. This puzzle was originally set as something for a "State of the Union" theme. When a new title was suggested by a test solver, the "Union Station" theme evolved making those numbers even more "arcane"... Thanks for sticking with it! :D
                  • Bird Lives 4s · 2024-03-25T17:09:50.380Z
I went down a short rabbit hole. From the intro, the title, and the clue for UNUM, I thought it was going to be about railroads. So when I saw PA(P)ER, I checked to see if 1816 and 1861 were significant dates for the Pennsylvania RR and the Erie RR. They weren't.
I don't usually enjoy metas that make me do a lot of Googling, but this time I needed only the one list. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, Jay. I tried to include subtle hints such as the U.S. flag in the photo and the talk about traveling all 50 states, including my summer trips "from MI to AK"... Glad to know it wasn't too stressful to Google. =)

Thanks, Meg. Googling the "list" takes away the guess work once you decide what those numbers are about. My original title was "These United States" and the answer was "a U.S. state", so I had to up the difficulty rating a tad. =)

My googles yesterday made the mistake of trying to link the dates to the grid entry, so I learned stuff about the original performance dates of TOSCA, etc. Ironically, the 1959 date struck me as Hawaii, and HART starting with H made me think about it for a second, but I was thinking that the entries would be state code pairs and obviously that didn't go anywhere. It wasn't until this morning that I thought to google the numbers alone. First couple weren't too promising-- 1816 and 1861 brought up the duration of something called The Kingdom of Two Sicilies, and then 1836 1846 brought up the Republic of Texas, so I thought they would all be things like that. Fortunately it eventually occurred to me that there was a reason the Republic of Texas stopped being a Republic, and then the former Hawaii notion clicked back in and off I went. Very fun idea, even if my journey was a little bumpy. :) Thanks.

Realized the dates and states a couple of days ago, a short hiatus because of life, then since I was lagging behind I hopped the shortline via some nudges. Fun journey and great puzzle, Darth!

Thanks, whimsy. You probably recognized the "black and white beast"... I had already constructed this puzzle (back in November) before your zoo puzzle with that similar feature of joining state abbreviations came out, so I was glad we delayed this one to give it some distance. Not sure if the numbers made it fun or more confusing. Thanks for solving, and hope you are doing well. ;)

"Dear me" is right! lol ... Well, it's near the end of the month, so a more challenging one is justified, I guess... I had thought that the "black and white beast" (OR+CA -- found in the grid) might be an easy tip off of what to do. Several solvers found the alternate answers but didn't know how they related to any kind of theme. Thanks for hanging in there and coming back to solve it even with nudges.
