Beer Me - DrTom & Cap'n Rick

· By DrTom · Published 2024-05-08T11:30:52.672Z

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a six letter word that will make everything right
How utterly fitting that two "tea-totalers" like us should do a puzzle like this. I suppose you can say we were trying to make you hoppy? This took the Captain's supreme skill at grids since the Doctor was out when it came to filling. It should be about a level 2 or 2.5, but give it a stout effort no matter what, we are sure it will be good for what ales you. Unfortunately if you solve it you don't win a mug, but you could fill one just for good measure!

I guess I remember doing this one? No matter -- I just had some fun (re)solving. Nice work, friends!

I think Rick sent it to you...you may have had one too many! Thanks for re-solving.

Beer me!! Erm, maybe not at this hour of the morning. Fun solve though, will dream of fields of barley…

Oh, that STUNG! (wait I may have spelled that wrong). Thanks for solving

Well that was fun! I smelled something brewing when I saw the BLANCHE (Streetcar) clue, since that often clues Stella. Fun to hunt down the rest of them!

You were supposed to drink your way through them...of course then you'd probably mistype the answer. Thanks Wendy

I don't even like beer, but I liked this puzzle! My method of solving the grid is usually to fill in the top row of Across entries, then go back and try the first n Down entries, then go back to Across as far as I can. That means by the time I hit STELLA I already had BLANCHE so I could tell where this was going.

Well Cap and I will disregard you first quintet of words (obviously something brought on by mid week blahs) but we ARE glad you liked the puzzle. We figured BLANCHE/STELLA might be the way home, and it was!

Ah, a meta involving one of my favorite pastimes. What could be better? First one I saw was BLANCHE/STELLA, and it was off to the races. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom and Rick!

Fun puzzle! I first suspected an alternative-answer mechanism with CORONA and RING; Stella --> Blanche and Miller --> Wife confirmed it. Had to go searching for the SIERRA and GUINESS entries, though. Thank you, guys!

Funny, my wife has to confirm everything for me...glad you saw the tie-ins. Now how do you know all the beers so well, and don't tell me from the Muggles! Thanks for solving

Very nice indeed. Would have been embarrassing if I couldn't solve this one (even though SIERRA Nevada is the only one I'd drink outside of Ireland). Saw BLUEMOON / ECLIPSE while filling the grid, then briefly thought it was going to be all astronomy when CORONA popped up. Delayed going down the path on the grounds that there wouldn't be an alt for GUINNESS (even though I subsequently realized there are at least two--Alec and the records). But then STELLA / BLANCHE clicked and I knew that had to be the way to go. All the alts were quick except GUINNESS, where I briefly considered 50D, but backsolving pointed to the R and then it was simple. Thanks!

Guinness was the most difficult and the sneakiest; well I suppose WIFE was also pretty sneaky.

I should have gotten it sooner when I wanted the answer to 1D to be Stella. Very nicely done, Dr Tom and Cap'n!

My NY City Council rep is Gale Brewer. I hope she will make everything right. I did need a nudge. Your elaborate themer clues each with a geogrphical location were successful in throwing me off the scent. I hope these were Easter eggs I haven't yet discovered and not merely red herrings.

Well, the locations were really to make sure people got the right beer and to make sure the themers stood out. They had no other function, fishy or not. (though with Milwaukee in the Miller clue and the baseball team the Milwaukee BREWERS I suppose it was a little eggy)
