Nudge 1: Forget the Kansas City football team. A better title would have been Washington Commanders.
Nudge 2 Note the day that the puzzle appeared. If necessary, take another look at Nudge 1.
Nudge 3 Where can you find the figures alluded to in those previous nudges? They don’t seem to be in the grid.
Nudge 3a Five of the clues, and only five, begin with words that are, or in one case could be, proper names.
Nudge 3b Those five all have something in common. (See Nudge 3)
Nudge 4 The associated entries have more than one meaning. For example, 5 Across is clued as a car, but that word has other meanings.
Nudge 5 Maybe there’s a clue for a different entry that could also clue the entry with the Washington Commander. Those alternate entries are the key to the answer.
Nudge 6 The alternate for one of the long themers is a sports reference. If you are unfamiliar with the proper name in that clue, you might need Google. (It is not the name of one of the Commanders. It is the name of, last I looked, a Giant.)
Nudge 7 Circle the initial letters of the alternate entries and read top to bottom in the grid.
