Meta Prompt
The meta answer is something you might find yourself uncomfortable in
I am going to go out on a limb and declare this one a Kitten (as opposed to going out on a limb to retrieve a kitten). My two testers got it right off the bat and both said it was a nice, calm trip to the end.
This puzzle was inspired by something I have tried to use to solve countless puzzles, and been wrong. So, figured I, why not finally use it...and I did.
The meta answer is something you might find yourself uncomfortable in.
Thanks to Meg and Cinny who were my experimental group, to the technical support of Joe Ross, and to the forum moderators (Kay, Mark Bob and Peter). What a wonderful group we have.

There will be nudges Friday (if needed)
It's Friday!
NUDGES:
Nudge 1] The meta answer is 6 letters long. Don't miss a letter or you will find yourself in something else you might feel uncomfortable in.
Nudge 2] Symmetry, you know how we love symmetry!
Nudge 3] The "dead center" in itself is not much of a help, but taken with its "qualifier"...
Nudge 4] What you need to see is not uncommon in puzzles, but it is uncommon here in that it is ONLY in theme words.
The REVEAL:
The title of the puzzle is "Crowded" and clues 41 and 52 across were designed to evoke the old saying "Two's company and three's a crowd".
Six grid answers, symmetrically placed, have a letter in them repeated three times.
TATTLE = T
HASHISH = H
MIRROR = R
COCOON = O
INNINGS = N
GAGGLE = G
Taken in GRID order it spells the word THRONG, the meta answer

    Cool! When you told me it was a kitten I was afraid I'd need thirty nudges over the next seven days and never get it.
    This maybe would have been harder except you gave just the right hints.

      Thank you for solving and for the kind words. Yes I HATE it when someone says kitten and I see a snarling mass of claws and teeth.

      Lovely puzzle, thanks. Great title and tie-in to grid nudges.

        Would have also fit the prompt without the "R" :-)

            Funny! This is one of the nudges I created when I was making the puzzle, should they be necessary:
            The meta answer is 6 letters long. Don't miss a letter or you will find yourself in something else you might feel uncomfortable in.
            Thank you for solving (and you comment fit to a T😂)

            The picture above ties it all together lol. Nice and easy, a Himalayan kitten, maybe?

              Excellent puzzle! Almost got distracted by the "crowds" in some clues, but I knew you wouldn't break symmetry willy-nilly. Great start to the day!
              • DrTom constructor · 2024-03-20T14:37:58.591Z
                Hmmm, I thought I only had "crowd" in the clue about "a crowd of honkers" and that was intentional because a GAGGLE had the three G's? If I had it elsewhere then, par for the course Tom. Thanks for solving, I am still working on yours.
                • Pair O Ducks 🤓10:48 · 2024-03-20T16:10:46.006Z
                  I don't think you did, have no fear! But I did try to tie in "cast of thousands" and MOSH pit before seeing the real path. Anything can be a "crowd" to my tired morning meta brain 😂
              • hoover 7s · 2024-03-20T12:34:42.724Z
                I've done enough of these that I know now to look at the picture first. Unfortunately, while I saw the three women in light blue/teal at the front, all I saw for the rest was twins, so at first I found myself plucking out the doubled letters, a mechanism we all try that never works. That led to an unsatisfyingly asymmetrical ESTRREE... so I backtracked to the THREE clue in the middle. Kitten for sure, except maybe the northwest corner of the grid, where I had 3D, 4D, 13A correct, but I also had 16A MESS and 20D OUI so I couldn't figure out what 19A was supposed to be.

                  Did I test solve this? I remember commenting that 37a does not refer to places, which you disagreed with. Anyway, it was a lovely solve (again!)
                  • DrTom constructor · 2024-03-20T14:32:33.979Z
                    You did, and we had the USO discussion. The USO is an organization to be sure, but GI's (and military families) refer to the individual buildings where they are "housed" (like in airports in the US and in ports of call in Europe) as USOs. So this is a lovely, "we are both right". Thanks for doing it again!

                        My first answer was incorrect -- a typo: THONG. But the prompt is "something you might find yourself uncomfortable in," and for me, it's more accurate than the accepted answer. Your mileage may vary.

                          See my comment to Laura M above. I will not say I did not consider that would happen. I mean I could, but it is me, who would believe me....

                          I also looked to the image first, and with the title and the notion that three's a crowd, I immediately assumed the answer would be THREESOME - certainly something I might find myself uncomfortable in.
