The answer is a 9-letter word indicating what you have to do to the theme entries. [NOTE: There are two errors in the puzzle. One of the theme words (72A is not a perfect version of the mechanism. And the order ofhte 7th and 8th letters of the answer is reversed.]

Nice one, thanks.
rjy 2s · 2023-06-19T12:43:20.153Z
Enjoyed it, Jay, and even after getting the metanism, it was still a fun challenge… not sure I got them all tho. Touché mapped to…?? Was that “shoot” as in 1A?
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T13:33:29.011Z
Yes, I thought TOUCHE - SHOOT was close enough. As I said in the intro, it wasn't easy finding good ones and then squeezing 18 entries into the grid.
I presume that warning note in the intro is supposed to reference 72A not 71A?
KayW 🤓8:30 · 2023-06-19T13:05:46.400Z
Fun one! After one funny (to me) mistranslation. My first thought was TOUCHE -> TUSH -> OLDASS (And I beg to differ on the latter's clue definition!) Thanks Jay
rjy 2s · 2023-06-19T14:27:57.856Z
From Jay's muggle name and occasional clueing, I take it he's an aficionado of music, perhaps more from the last century than this. So I read that as OLDies ASSessor...
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T15:41:41.440Z
TUSH is good. I checked Clue Database,, which has logged 164 appearances. The "Cry of disgust" clues are from long ago; more recent ones include things like "Moon shot."
KayW 🤓8:30 · 2023-06-21T23:34:32.700Z
Except that TUSH in PORCUS is USHTAY, not TOUCHE. haha. Which goes to show how hard it is to come up with these words. Well done!
Hector 11:09 · 2023-06-19T13:41:34.253Z
Feeling thick this Monday morning. Is there a mechanism from SANTA (and/or LIST) to TRANSLATE, or just picking the natural word for pig-latin transformation, or did I get off track somewhere?
Hector 11:09 · 2023-06-19T14:10:39.728Z
Never mind, I did miss all but the *AY themers. Wow, impressive!
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T15:50:21.578Z
Thanks. But does this mean that you got the answer without using the themers? That's impressive.
Fun MMM, Jay! 8A was a new word for me. I had trouble with that Pig Latin puzzle a few weeks ago, so the 11D clue really stuck out -- and simultaneously I realized how many "Y's" I was writing in.
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T15:43:48.116Z
Do you mean the Pig Latin part of the Cox-Rathvon variety puzzle? I think we had only one in common - underway. I put "real Latin" in that clue since I figue that everyone would have already figured out the Pig Latin theme.
THC 🤓1:47 · 2023-06-19T15:42:15.206Z
Thanks, Jay!
kymike 2s · 2023-06-19T16:00:09.128Z
Not only did we have to think about this one, we had to work as well. Missing one piece, but able to backsolve.
Berto 🤓3:46 · 2023-06-19T15:58:36.617Z
So I got there, but may have mistranslated at some point. I used Hargitay>Target>Aim, but with AtBay>Bat>Tool and Esme>Mess>Eats that gave me Transltae - or is that part of the pig Latin lol?
How did you get the R in TRANS and how did you avoid ESTEE> STAY > STET and the very end. Is ESTEE = STAY supposed to somehow become an R In RAWER, RAN, or RATE?
Guessed the answer almost immediately, but needed to work it out of course. Like Hector, I initially was stuck with just the *AY entries (quite fiendish that they spell a coherent word on their own :)). Still not 100% sure I mapped everything correct because I had TOOL and AIM which seem not quite in grid order. Regardless, fun stuff, thanks.
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T20:12:42.279Z
You're right, of course. That must have happened in the switch from one revision to the next, and I didn't notice it.
I have to admit that I solved this with help from my husband. I am not good at, and never think of, Pig Latin --- even with the huge hint in the title! But after he told me that, it was a smooth solve. Thanks, Jay!
minimuggle 🤓15:47 · 2023-06-19T18:31:49.991Z
wonderful puzzle. thanks
MatthewL 🤓8:10 · 2023-06-19T19:05:41.292Z
Fun one. Took me quite a while to figure out what was going on, but finally got there. Could not figure out TOUCHE (SHTEW was what I was coming up with), but got the other 8 and it was obvious what it was. Thanks Jay!
whimsy 17:22 · 2023-06-19T19:39:37.631Z
Still a little fuzzy on the tail end of the piggy. But with the prompt and enough letters I took a reasonable guess that panned out. Will be glad to examine it even more closely once the dust settles. Thanks for an entertaining refresher course, Jay!
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-19T21:16:30.763Z
Please don't examine it closely. The mistake in construction will only appear that much more egregious.
Carolyn 3s · 2023-06-19T20:45:11.790Z
Very fun! Guessed the answer but then worked it out.
Eric Porter 8s · 2023-06-20T16:16:03.154Z
I also guessed the answer because I was having a little trouble translating all of them back. My next step would have been to look for other clues matching it.
Well I certainly did it the hard way (or ardhay away) because I KNEW you were talking about "pig latin" (though you technically had piglet in Latin, not pig) and then you emphasized "real" Latin. BUT, I got LOUT = SLOB, WUNDER = ?AWE, BAT = TOOL and then slid into trouble since there is actually a RASHT and a THARGI. But since there were some that went across ok and I had to translate them and translate is a 9 letter word, I took a shot. I like your real mechanism though I had not thought about sounding them out in addition to them being pig latin since some were actually as the "real" pig Latin way. Fun on a Monday (or Unfay On A Ondaymay)
ReB 3s · 2023-06-19T22:42:42.659Z
The puzzle started out well, but I got bogged down with determining several of the translations and corresponding synonyms. I initially got seven letters (two of which turned out to be erroneously derived), which when I put them into grid order were enough to indicate the answer word.
Between the comments here and grueling backsolving, I now think I have derviations for eight letters, but I'm not sure about how you derived the second T, from ATBAY to BAT to ?? | TOOL is the most logical synonym, but it precedes AIM; TOUCHE, the only T-word after AIM, doesn't make sense and is also the 9th themer).
I suppose I will have to await the reveal to make it all clear. But overall the puzzle was not a very satisfying experience for me. That doesn't take away, though, from your ingenious construction.
Bird Lives constructor · 2023-06-20T01:09:38.057Z
In the revised intro on the x0muggles board, I added that the the order of two of the letters is inverted, -- the A (from AIM) and T (from TOOL)..
Ergcat 2:27 · 2023-06-20T00:19:30.829Z
Fun one! I knew it was pig Latin right away. Found the 9 themers to “translate” but had a little struggle with a few of them (epee, estee , and touché). Finally able to backsolve, though.
HeadinHome 🤓19:23 · 2023-06-20T01:34:59.089Z
