Lateral Thinking

· By Darth · Published 2024-02-21T11:00:24.313Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a group activity.
Hey there! It's Darth, and I'm excited to present you with my fifth meta puzzle. This idea for this one was formed after a family event during the holidays and was originally titled "Cryptic Collaboration" with the plan of presenting a meta challenge that would encourage a "group" solve. Not to worry, it's much tamer now and more accessible. (Note those starred clues that help guide you to the solution.)
I'd love to say more, but it might spoil the joy of discovery. After all, that's what "lateral thinking" is all about!

When I saw "lateral" I thought football, but when I saw "thinking" I got worried. Fun puzzle. Thanks.

Fun! I've never done one of these. ZOO was what did it for me, then REO.

Nice puzzle. It's always a plus when the mechanism and the answer fit together. I've never done an escape room, but I assume it requires thinking outside the box, which might be an alternate title. My favorite instance of this mechanism was this NYT puzzle: https://www.xwordinfo.com/Crossword?date=1/7/2016

Great! Glad you enjoyed it! Our family did the escape room, and my daughter said, "You need to use this as a theme for one of your meta crossword constructions." So, I did! =)

FUN. Zoo was a brick wrapped in a handkerchief. RAISE raised an eyebrow while I was doing the grid but was easily forgotten. DEN being the very first entry was ARK at first. Other then Zoo the metanism was subtly subdued. Nice.

When I started this puzzle, "Taking One for the Team" was still on my brain. I must have seen that on the Forum page. The first "turning" word I found was CAPTORS. I remembered "Raptors on the scoreboard" as a clue and was hot on the trail of other words that would become teams if you changed one for the team. Thankfully I shook that off fairly quickly, but not until I had scoured the entire grid and all of the clues!

I actually had a shout out to Clark E. for that clue, but we removed it since others on Crosshare may not be Muggles. The "gutsy" clue was suggested by DrTom and I really liked it. :D Thanks, whimsy.

Didn't see it immediately, but after a couple of intervening meetings it struck me right away when I picked it back up. OREO and then ZOOM. HISS was the only one I had a (?) by until assembling the rest. Fun stuff, thanks.

It was a dilemma. How do you clue HIS and HISS at the same time? But it stayed out of necessity. lol Thanks for solving.

Thanks, Peter. Good to know it wasn't super easy. And, yeah, I had thought of THIS as another possessive. My friend from the south calls his dad POPS, too. I originally had HOP and HOPE there, which only seemed to work with "___ in" (Original clue: Respond with eager anticipation)... but I finally decided to rework that whole piece. It was a fun experiment.

Fun and well-constructed. Started earlier today, solved grid and expected I would have to add letters to outside the puzzle, but then had to put it aside. Just before going to bed, I took another glance, looked at 1A, said to myself that I'd expected the answer would have EDEN rather than "Daniel in the lion's DEN" - checked 66A for symmetry, saw that the more normal answer was ZOOM rather than the humorous ZOO - and it was off to the races. Thanks.

Perfect. That was the solution path I was hoping folks would take with it. Glad you escaped the room with time remaining. =)
