Meta Prompt
The answer is a Christmas song
Nudge 1 It should be obvious that themers are contrived phrases. But they can be easily transformed into conventional entries. But how?
Nudge 2 The five themers all have something in common. That thing has nothing to do with their
Nudge 2a meaning.
It has a lot to do with their Nudge 2b letters.
Nudge 3 The significance of those (see Nudge 2b) is the same as in the WSJ puzzle of two weeks ago (“Table for Two”). The table in question is periodic.
Nudge 4 The clue at 69A tells you what to do with that element of the themers.
Nudge 5 The themers have now become new phrases. But the clues for those five new theme entries do not fit. For each one, you must search the clues for a clue that does fit.
Nudge 6 Those clues lead you to new entries. As in most metas, the relevant letter of those entries is the first one.
Nudge 7 You now have a 5-letter word. But that word is not the title of a Christmas song. To create that title, you have to do something similar to the way you transformed the themers except that you must do it in reverse. In other words.
Nudge 7a what had been removed must now be restored.
Nudge 8 Or you could forget all of this, go to Google, and enter the words above the grid.

I only half got it. I solved the "bells" part. After guessing "Jingle Bells" and "Carol of the Bells", I got it. Then it hit me that AG = silver.
    • Bird Lives publisher · 2024-12-16T12:55:46.086Z
You could have gotten it not just without the AG but without anything else. Just Google the words above the grid.

Wow, Jay, I didn't realize you were quite that old!

I was going to guess SILVER BELLS just from 69 across, but didn't want to miss the fun of the metanism. But I am curious - what words above the grid would have given it to us?

(scurries to google song authorship...) Whoa!! Yep I guess you HAD to write this meta. That came together nicely.

Yay, Xmas song by Jay Livingston. Now I will remember the creator when I hear the song.

I'm still missing the replacement for DEADPAN, and it needs to start with an L, so I guess it's not AGOG. Maybe LEWD or LEONINE?
            • woozy 24:25 · 2024-12-16T16:16:09.080Z
And the clue for LEWD was....

Fun one, Jay (and Peter)! For a minute there when I saw AUSTIN, I thought you might be going for the Burl Ives song.

Fun one. Here's one for your cutting room floor -- Maul a male deer? SAVAGE A BUCK. On second thought, maybe I'll leave this to the experts. Thanks for the puzzle, Jay!

Violin virtuoso. What's left after burning Old Glory. Root for the bad guy in "Othello." Ringer emblazoned with an orange "47"?

Had to reveal puzzle for some mistakes (Malesna instead of Maleska gave me Anne instead of Anne — both guessing of course), and had HIHO instead of HIYO silver, figuring RAH must be a fish I never heard of (duh). Never heard of Chicago MX and google says it’s a race venue and a pizza parlor, so I’ll read comments here to figure out where the S comes from. (?). Easy enough to guess without that piece though! Thx.

                                          Yeah… i still don’t know where the S comes from. ?

Which themer do you still not have a co-entry for? You know that the co-entry starts with S and that it has to be lower in the grid than the second L.
