In Need of Repairs

· By ajk · Published 2024-07-22T04:00:28.562Z

Meta Prompt
The meta answer might lead to some repairing
Happy Monday. This one came from one of the more common meta idea sources--misunderstanding what to do with someone else's puzzle. 😂😂
Might be a bit on the more subtle side to start, but hopefully a clear path one things get rolling. And there are always Wednesday nudges if not.
Thanks to Wendy Walker and Abide for test solving and significantly improving the polish. Thanks as always to Joe Ross for tech support.
Hope you enjoy.
cheers,
Alan
Nudges:
Did you notice anything odd about some of the clues?
Some of them sound pretty similar, no?
How are you parsing repair?
How might you re-pair the entries with related clues?
Aha, 7 new entries! What do we do with new entries?
Having trouble with the last letter? That clue pair doesn't have a comma in it

Wanna guess how many times I read through the clues? Whew. Very clever, Alan.

:) part of the polish imparted by the test solvers was to make that process a bit easier, so you can thank them that it wasn't even a couple more times :)
    • Darth 14:17 · 2024-07-22T13:29:31.791Z
Nice idea, Alan. I wasn't familiar with the Cincinnati athlete (until I Googled), so I originally had "bad roommate material" but SEUNION didn't make sense.... So, I needed a repair. ;)
      • ajk constructor · 2024-07-22T15:12:08.588Z
Heh. Totally understandable. :) Glad you got there in the end.
      • woozy 18:25 · 2024-07-22T14:33:30.766Z
Pretty cute. I had a really hard time as I had never heard of the cincinati bearcats but google made it clear.
Is the final N meant to be missing? (I got REUNIO(N)... was that missing final letter supposed to be part of the joke).
Fun puzzle and really cute to play with.
        • ajk constructor · 2024-07-22T15:15:40.669Z
Thanks. :) I like the idea of the last letter being left off. But in truth it was there, albeit probably the most subtle one. The two clues that start with "Golf course" point you toward that last N.
          • woozy 18:25 · 2024-07-22T18:52:51.703Z
Ah.... "Golf course" without a comma was too natural for me to notice it was going on twice. I had even done a page search for commas. I thought mechapuzzle would have an ability to look for common strings and sequences in clues but apparently not. (Or if it does I couldn't get it to work.)

              CART+ELS = NARCO
We have a very famous Bearcat alum among us in Joe Ross.
              • kurtalert 🤓4:19 · 2024-07-22T16:30:32.139Z
I got stuck there too - but I see it now. CART + ELS = CARTELS = NARCO.
                • woozy 18:25 · 2024-07-22T15:05:54.649Z
.... or is the final N from NARCO. Drug-source... still can't find the pair of clues that make this. Can't be BEARCAT relating to Civet-poop coffee, can it? (Caffeine is a drug, the best drug.)

I backsolved one of the Ns but had to come here to see what the other one was.
                    • ajk constructor · 2024-07-22T17:35:09.007Z
First N from BRA / VEST = NOBLE, second from CART / ELS = NARCO
                    • Bird Lives 3s · 2024-07-22T16:16:53.378Z
Very nice, and probably not an easy construction. Twenty-one dedicated entries doesn't leave a lot of flexibility for the fill. I confess I had to backsolve for the R (don't tell Joe).
                      • ajk constructor · 2024-07-22T17:32:41.853Z
😆 thanks. And yeah, this one was definitely not easy to fill. 😆😆

Very cool. I got to REUNIO_ and solved at that point. I'm assuming the last N has to be from NARCO, but in backsolving, I'm still not sure which clues need to combine for that one. Awesome puzzle, though.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed. Golf course vehicle / Golf course major champion = CART / ELS
                            • woozy 18:25 · 2024-07-22T18:58:14.634Z
Excellent puzzle. I was seeing the paired clues as "Identical clues, detailed specification" so I didn't really see it. For people with my specific narrowminded focus maybe a more recognizable pair of clues would be "Vehicle, for the golf course" and "Major champion, for the golf course". But then again my narrow minded focus need not be catered to.
                              • ajk constructor · 2024-07-23T19:24:51.628Z
Yeah, that might have been better. But as you say it would flip the order of common and specific. Still, might have been easier. :)

Had me going for a while. Was assigning “Aston” to “bearcat” in the world of automobiles. Dawned on me that that didn’t fit the pattern exactly. Good workout this morning (for me, anyway). Thanks!

The combos are really natural. I can see why it might have been necessary to make the repetition in the clues more prominent.
                              • ajk constructor · 2024-07-23T19:26:17.768Z
yeah, some were looser in the original version. relying too much on things you should pair, etc. Current version is definitely better.

I had four letters and entered RENO as the answer (as in a renovation...which often leads to repairs). I had to go back to the clues after than to get the real answer - thanks for the puzzle, Alan - very clever

Very, very nice. I was wondering, is this just stylish cluing, or is it a thing? Pulled out a blank sheet of paper to write out some answer pairs and concluded it was a thing. It took a bit longer to find all the pairs.

Very clever Alan! But boy, the search for that last N was tough -- leaving off the comma in those 2 Golf clues was tricksy. Also, finding the right entry for BARRACK was tough, because I kept looking for something to do with OBAMA. Thanks for the workout!

Excellent! CART ELS took me a long time, I think because it was missing the telltale comma. I knew the answer by that point but I'm a completionist :-)

BEARCAT actually helped me get started (Joe would be proud.) And CARTELS was an after the fact for me, but sooo good! What was really funny was me, once I understood what was going on, repeating BRA (with a short A) VEST several times in a row before I saw the light! As Meg says, I'm a rascal that applied force -- IMP-PRESSED!

I couu you la not see the others for a long time and actually had to backsolve to get the N and even then it took forever. HUM DRUM was my in along with CRIB BED, and I looked for a President FOREVER until I went back and looked at the spelling. Great puzzle

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I am starting to rue how tricky that last N was, but you can't have everything. :)

For some reason my typing fingers went crazy...the alien paragraph above should read, "I could not see the others...."

Fun one, Alan....thanks! Had some trouble finding the last N, but when I finally got it, your use of crossword fave Ernie "Els" made me smile.

Yeah, I probably should have tried harder to come up with one that made it easier to make the clue pair stand out. But CARTELS was just too cool looking. 😆

It would be interesting to poll to see which pair was the entry point, and which the last to fall. For me, hum-drum being beside each other was found early, but I didn’t even notice their clue similarity… just thought we were looking for other pairs in same lines (then I found LOW DOWN and happened to notice their clues and the jig was up). Took me forever to backsolve for the middle N! (Maybe because the second Torso clue was right below another used clue that I had pretty sloppily circled.). This was a brilliant puzzle!

Very clever. No nudges needed and I didn't get the final N, even after knowing that it must be "Drug source".
