Dude, I'm Baked

β—† Β· By DrTom Β· Published 2024-07-03T11:30:57.100Z

Meta Prompt
The answer is a word a Brit might use to describe our obsession with metas
This was made a while back, and was pretty thoroughly tested. I am guessing it will be about a Kitten or a Calico but it is an implied answer and sometimes those play harder. I have been saving it because I thought it most apropos for this time period, something I hope all the solvers will "get".
KITTEN*
CALICO*
Persian
Puma
Lion
I got scads of help from my testers: edestlin, Cap'n Rick, rjy, Snood, and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart. If there are any quirky parts of the puzzle it is NOT their fault, I probably just did not listen.
With that, I'll leave you to your own devices. If you do not get the cat out immediately don't worry, kitty will probably stay in the bag to avoid all of the people shooting off fireworks.
There will be Friday nudges, or sooner if needed.
π™Žπ™Šπ™‡π™‘π™€π™π™Ž π™‹π™‡π™€π˜Όπ™Žπ™€ π™π™€π˜Όπ˜Ώ: Disregard 52D which was written when there was only one letter missing from the Grid. In edits I changed a word and lost the one instance of the letter (W) I had. So 52D does not work as written because there are TWO missing letters...unless of course you look at this note and see that there was supposed to be a W in the grid.....
NUDGES (in increasingly pushy order):
Sorry, had an eye appointment today and I can finally see well enough to post nudges...
Nudge 1] Baked might just as easily refer to a cooking technique as a stoner term
Nudge 2] There are 7 instances of the meta mechanism symmetrically throughout the puzzle.
Nudge 3] One prominently placed "instance" is slightly different than the other 6 in terms of preceding versus following
Nudge 4] If you were watching "Capital Fourth" last evening, or actually if you were almost anywhere, you heard one of the mechanism words
Nudge 5] The graphic actually holds a hint, I've been cautioned to stop that but this was made before that caution. Look at some of the snacks in the picture, are they anywhere else?
The Reveal:
Six symmetrical clues could have the word CRACKER appended to them (like FIRE which was the impetus for the puzzle and the tie in with the 4th).
SODA
OYSTER
SAFE
RITZ
ANIMAL
FIRE
The middle entry, though indeed another CRACKER, was a nudge clue of sorts because here CRACKER comes in front, but I thought people may think CRACKER JACKS, of course and then go back to the others.
All this led to the meta answer - CRACKERS (which I might add are baked!). Which is a term for "crazy" that came to us from the British Navy referring to firecrackers in one's head, originally as "he's got the crackers" and then "he's gone crackers" before the present "he is crackers".
One nudge clue (52D) went awry due to a grid change. Originally the lower left corner had REGINA and GREW.
When I changed the grid (Regina was a more obscure answer than RETINA) I got rid of the W making BOTH Q and W a missing letter. The original idea was that with only the Q missing people would pick up on the name for the duck being QUACKER.

Nice! I found 6 of them, and the symmetry always helps. ;) Thanks, DrTom.

There were 6. The middle entry was to do double duty, hint at the need to append CRACKER (JACKS) and give me overall symmetry (though of course it was a before not an after). Unfortunately my attempt to have one more "egg" bit me in the butt because I edited out the one W I had. If I had kept it then there would have been only a Q missing...52D Nickname for a downy pond dweller starting with Q - QUACKER

When I first entered Crackers it was rejected by Crosshare but it seems that the site has had its digestive biscuit now. Thank, DrTom.

Once we saw the note about 52-D, the solution quickly fell into place.

This was tough for me. They only thing I saw was 36 across the clue was so weirdly worded, I figured it was opening with jacks was a good move in poker (this makes less and less sense the longer you think about it) but it was weir to talk about the pot as a "prize". So I figured you need to add "Jack" before words like... hmm, Well, Jack Oakie.... or Jack Best and ... there's got to be a Rabbit here somewhere...
But what bugged me was the 52 down. Why didn't he just drop the comment and what did the comment mean anyway? What's a nick name for a duck anyhow? Quacker? so Quacker Jack???
And the whole thing fell into place with the OYSTER, JACKS, and RITZ.
But after a quick submit I see there are a lot of Crackers. Gosh. That's pretty good.

Yeah, there was a glitch (see previous comments, the Crosshare intro or the Muggles site) that made that perfectly lovely clue a distraction instead of a nudge.
                • Bird Lives 4sΒ Β·Β 2024-07-03T16:29:48.320Z
Crackers indeed. I assume that FIRE is for the Fourth. As for the ANIMAL, I put them together with HARPO and got Captain Spaulding. (Did someone call me schnorrer?) So Hello, I must be going.

I get 7, unless I'm miscounting (or "cracking" up) - either of which is possible!
                      • DrTom constructorΒ Β·Β 2024-07-03T19:29:47.681Z
THere are 7, the middle JACKS can of course become the old favorite CRACKER JACKS, I just discounted it because all the others FOLLOWED the word and I sometimes get dinged for inconsistency, still when JACKS showed up as the middle entry how could I disregard it.

Nice! Amused at how I missed some nuance in the prompt: My first submission was "cracker" which appears to mean great, whereas "crackers" means crazy :-)
                        • DrTom constructorΒ Β·Β 2024-07-04T03:05:41.493Z
Yes, what a difference a letter makes. The word apparently derives from British naval expressions referring to firecrackers in one's head, originally as "he's got the crackers" and then "he's gone crackers" before the present "he is crackers". However, a "real cracker" or "she's a cracker" can also be a description of a good looking woman (or man) and anything good in general as in " I had a cracking good time".

The firecrackers going off in my neighborhood helped me to the solution. Baked indeed!

I had no trouble with this at all… no googling, no issues with the W because when I got to Q I stopped searching… that must be it… and Quacker is a cute nickname for a duck… but how to use it? Hmm… oyster quacker? Ooh there’s soda too… AH it’s CRACKERS! Fun one, thanks!

I was going crackers trying to solve this!! I figured the answer had to be a word beginning with Q (given the focus on 52down), and tried all kinds of Quack derivatives, and then suddenly RITZ stood out at me and the lightbulb went off. Very quaint!

Initially had nothing. Came back to it this morning and saw CRACKER JACKS and then went looking for more things to follow CRACKER to no avail. Wasn't until just now that I looked for leaders, and then it came quickly. Nice one, thanks. :)
