Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a 9-letter word
Happy Sunday!
No idea where this one came from. Just popped into my head and I wondered if I could make it work. The mechanism is very simple (to the point where I worried it was a bit too simple), so I doubt this will be too much of a challenge. But hopefully it will provide some amusement. :)
Thanks to Wendy Walker and Capn Rick for test solving, especially since this one required several go-rounds on the fill. Thanks as always to Joe Ross for tech support.
Nudges later today should anyone need them (and feel free to PM anytime), solution on Saturday.
Hope you enjoy! cheers, Alan
Nudges:
A couple of clues have rather suggestive parenthetical asides
Can you find some places to switch options?
While filling the grid, did you ever find yourself confidently entering what turned out to be the wrong answer?
There are 8 symmetrically placed entries that form 4 interchangeable pairs
After you swap entries, things should be in sequence.
OK, so that might get us 8 letters. Where's the 9th? One word has no symmetry partner.

Not too obvious! Without the title or the intro or the middle clue, I'd have noticed the Red, tan and dismissed it but with the tittle. A clencher. Still had too look though.
              Fun puzzle. Thanks!

Love the symmetry of the grid itself. And, of course, the theme entries... and "entries".

If it hadn't been for a certain nautical captain (Ahab? Bligh? Hook? -- someone) leaning on constructors to place themers in symmetrical locations, it might have taken me a few more minutes to solve this one. Enjoyable in any case.

Did it without the nudges, but having fallen into the #3 trap once, I held my fire on the others, and knew that was the place to focus. Perfect way to finish the evening, Thanks!

No nudges needed, but i did have to reveal puzzle because i had a bad letter (originally had VAGRANT for MIGRANT and had erased the V but not the A… so wracking my brain for what new thing HA_ could delay my flight, and whether I was looking for E_LINK or U_LINK .. since MESSES or MUSSES worked for 24A). Also temporarily sidetracked by the multiple swaps available: a number of things could be used to settle a debt (BILL - gold, notes as in IOU notes); same for trade value (GOLD - iron, album, even notes as in trading notes in school). Obviously got there, but not without some crazy (silly) sidepaths! Fun puzzle.

Yeah, I was definitely leaning on symmetry a bit there with some of the loser definitions. 😂 Glad you had fun. :)

Well Alan, you had me going for a while. I was slowing my trip through the airport because of a new ETA and then when that did not make sense I figured it was the new ACL I just got. I was looking for 9 different things, not realizing that ENTRIES was one of them and was in effect the turning point. You'd be surprised how inventive I got. I asked myself "is modern art HIP?", "does a lamp contain an oil tank?", "is a position ASEA", and then the one that had me messed up for quite some time GOLD and IRON have trade value and some people might use a ROCK to settle a debt. When it became clear that you meant the entries to fit in the same space it got easier and then I got it out of my head that a BUS might be a frequent visitor to Rocky Mountain National Park.
In the end I enjoyed it immensely! Clever double meanings.
