Re-solved! Thanks again for the puzzle!

So, am I the only one who spent a lot of time trying to figure out what SCDSEME meant? Then I remembered the cover. But still a really fun puzzle.

Yes to momentary confusion about D instead of U, but I 16a-ed quickly. Fun!

Guessed it before figuring out the mechanism, but did wait until I had solved it properly :)

Knew it before I even started, but want the fun of seeing all the misconceptions. One I garnered from an old flame was from the Beatles "Penny Lane". She was CERTAIN she heard "and he landed in my ears and in my eyes".

Clever and fun. Needed that U though!

Not a musical example, but when I was about 5 years old and my mother took me to the library, I asked her about the wood and glass panels positioned behind the check-out librarian's back. She told me they were there to keep out the drafts. I spent the next few years wondering why there were giraffes wandering around town.

LOL very clever. I had to look up some of theme entries because I knew only the correct lyrics and couldn't imagine how people misheard them. I guess my hearing was better in my youth. And I found DOBIE GRAY for DRIFT AWAY (knew the song but not who sang it) but as soon as I saw the other letters I knew I needed the U

Like others I knew only the Doobie Bros. version but backsolved quickly. I couldn't figure out for the longest time why Stevie Wonder would sing about an "apartheid lover." Imagine my chagrin upon learning the lyrics were "a part-time lover." Thanks for the puzzle, Jay!

I learned a new word ("mondegreen"). Thanks, Jay! My favourite mondegreen is Taylor Swift's "Starbucks lovers".

In my head: "Before I got home I had an ice cream cake." LOL!!!!!!!

Had it before nudges, but maybe typed the lyric in wrong (or maybe right) the other day. Have to admit still thought "Beach Boys" was the actual lyric of Drift Away until Monday. Thanks Jay!

Thank you for sharing this puzzle! Great cluing and clever meta-ing (again!). My first thought was the title pointed to a Christmas Carol but I could not get confirmation for any such Noel so I moved on to titles and then was left with artists. "Hearing" Jimi Hendrix sing in my head was a nice thing too!

Thanks for the Wednesday grin! I heard 36a as... Gimme the best box... Three months old...

Well, I swore I was lost and couldn't go anywhere at all with it. I did everything right and I couldn't get it no matter what order. So I bitch and moan for some clarification and the response is "well, you got what you got" and in hindsight it's completely obvious and inconceivable how I couldn't see it.

Got it with nudges! Actually I had the relevant pieces laid out and was playing with the performers names … knowing to use “first names” was the nudge I needed! Thanks, Jay!

Sigh. I should have just skipped the puzzle altogether and submitted the five-word phrase that popped into my head when I read the puzzle intro. I would have saved myself a lot of head-scratching.

I was stuck on the D. But sad to say, I just didn't see this one. I only got it thanks to a fellow muggle who practically had to hit me over the head with it. I have been having a rough time with metas this week.
