Deranged

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a 6th member that might hold the deranged family members together
This is one of those delightful little puzzles (from a constructor standpoint) that comes to you, comes together quickly, has little if any problems with the fill and has a fun twist. Now whether the solvers will see it that way is another story!
I'd put this as a Calico and it should not give you any trouble, but of course if it does I am usually available for nudges even before the actual Friday "Nudge Day"
My Testers were meg and lbray53 who both did a superb job in helping me see some problems and giving me a better title.
Kitten
CALICO
Persian
Puma
Lion
NUDGES:
Nudge 1] I have stopped giving away "banner nudges", but this one was made before that. Look at the graphic; isn't it really the same person in just a slightly different "configuration"?
Nudge 2] The theme answers are, more or less, symmetric
Nudge 3] There are 5 theme answers, as the prompt suggests
Nudge 4] As for hints, I can give you the lightest concerning the first "member"
Reveal:
Five "family" members that have the same makeup but in a slightly different order (i.e. deranged):
PALEST
PLATES
PETALS
PASTEL
PLEATS
So what 6th member, with the same letters, might hold them together?
STAPLE

If you see it, you see it. If you don't, you don't!

Pretty nifty. Had a rough go in the 3x3 square with 41 in the upper left--confluence of hard clues there. But noticed all the Ps during the solve, and eventually toppled to the fact that some of the p-words had more in common. Was going to throw it into an anagram solver but decided to see if I could just come up with and it didn't take long. :) Fun stuff, thanks.

I should have seen it when I was filling in the grid, but I was looking for anything having to do with ranges -- mountains (yes, there is a mountain), kitchen appliances, rating on some range of points, etc. Oh well, it became clear as soon as I'd finished and looked back.

Darn, solvers are finding all kinds of clever ideas I never even thought of.
            Best keep track!
            Thanks for solving

I remember test-solving this. My memory is not abandoning me! And symmetrical. Good one, Dr T.

Not bad, I got stuck trying to find "split" words for a while but then I saw PALEST/PASTEL.

Makes sense...never even thought of that.

This one was ripe with rabbits... that title had me looking for "ranges" and then those pics of James McAvoy had me looking for "Split" word pairs... but the odd question was how would I find a set of 5 family members that could use a 6th one?? Hmm...that got me back on track! :D Thanks, DrTom!

Excellent puzzle, Dr. Tom - not at all deranged :)

Saw it right away, but thought at first that it might by Sly keeping the family Stone together since Stoned was the missing symmetric item in the grid.

Wow that took longer than it shoulda. I had all kinds of ideas about family members (there was MOAN LOT AGUE … had to be MONTAGUE; but where is CAPE YOU LET ??). Then there was LETS bottom left and CHIC bottom right… Chiclets? Are there nicknames of family members? (B)RUDDERS, NAAN(A)?? Not sure why I noticed the right track after all that insanity, but there it was. Nice one!!

I read the intro as meg and lbray53 gave ‘you’ a better title (as opposed to the puzzle) - how rude! Not deranged at all, quite delightful, Doctor- although the first ‘family’ that came to me was the Patels!!

Oh, I am certain MANY Muggles, particularly when I have posted a stinker or a level 3-4, have given me a different title. As for the family, you certainly would be in good (and a large) company there. I probably have had over 200 colleagues/employees/students/friends with that surname over the years.
