PCC#32 "This Puzzle Sucks"

Meta Prompt
[Level 1] Meta Prompt: The answer to the meta is a video game character
There is a bar in this puzzle at 27-Down. No need to overanalyze this bar... it is NOT part of the meta puzzle... I simply couldn't find symmetric theme answers to use, so just decided to go with it. Like the title says, this puzzle sucks... 😭
Hint #1: There are 5 entries with a parenthetical number in their clues... these are the 5 theme entries
Hint #2: Can you figure out what they have in common? If you've done household chores before, it might be easier
Hint #3: They all contain vacuum cleaner brands
Hint #4: Consider the nth letter of the vacuum cleaner brand where n = number in parenthesis
Hint #5: If you circle the five letters, the answer can be read out in grid order

Answer explanation: EUREKAMOMENT, ANDYMIELE, HOOVERDAM, DJROOMBA, and FREEMANDYSON all have vacuum cleaner brands in them: Eureka, Miele, Hoover, Roomba, Dyson... The parenthetical number tells us which letter to extract K I R B Y... and so the meta answer is Kirby, a video game character whose signature ability is sucking up his enemies and copying their abilities.
There is a vacuum cleaner brand called Kirby as well and one might think that the Nintendo character is named after it due to its sucking power but the name Kirby was chosen partly in honor of American lawyer John Kirby, who defended Nintendo in the Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo Co., Ltd. case.
"Be Kind to Lawyers Day" is celebrated on the second Tuesday of April. This occasion first came to light when a non-lawyer found himself surrounded by lawyer friends who felt underappreciated. Consider showing appreciation for the lawyer(s) in your life :)

Very cool! I'd heard of Kirby vacuum cleaners, but not that character. But I recognized him when I googled. So now I know his name. Fun meta, and I learned something too - thanks!

Thanks Phil! Fun puzzle. Kirby's Crafted World is one of my go-to Switch games and when I first met my wife years 35 ago she had an ancient Kirby vacuum...the thing was indestructible!

One of these days, I'm going to try to figure out what that not misheard lyrics of 9D are supposed to be and if they make any sense.

Thought I was sunk when I saw video game character, but I decided to just suck it up and give it a try. And whadya know -- it turned out to be a level one as promised! Thanks, Phil

Hah, awesome! My high school nickname, and, we even had a Kirby vacuum for a long time. Great puzzle, thanks Philip!

I recognized Kirby as a vacuum brand. Nice story behind Kirby, the Nintendo character. Thanks, Philip!

Thanks! I never heard of Kirby the vacuum… the inspiration of the puzzle loosely came from a drag queen introducing herself as “Hi I’m Eureka like the vacuum cleaner” and another queen responding confusedly “uhhhh I don’t vacuum”… to be honest I never heard of Eureka the vacuum cleaner either… so I googled and googled and made sure I used brands that are well-known but can still sort of be hidden enough to not spoil the puzzle in one second… but judging by the 100% correct submission rate so far maybe it’s too easy 😂

Quick solve, no hints. Oddly, the crosshare grid had four blanks on the bottom left that were just blacks on the pdf. Had to reveal puzzle to enter meta answer. ?

Thanks for solving! the crosshare puzzle came first - when I couldn’t export the puz file because of the barred grid, I modified the bottom left to make the pdf version… sorry for the mix-up but either puzzle you solve will lead you to the pink puffball ☺️

Hi Phil, I enjoy your puzzles, but the "Reveal" button on this site shows a different entry at the SW corner.

thanks i'm glad you like my puzzles :)... i made two versions of the puzzle because I had trouble exporting the separator bar in 27D (between ROOMBA and SEXY) into the puz/pdf version... Answer key for the puz/pdf version on the Muggles forum: For 60A, replace SOAK with DIAL... and delete 63A and replace with 4 black squares (no more SEXY 😢)

Can't help but always run into you and Kirby together in these metas! Really appreciate the way that you clue fill that would otherwise be unnavigable.
