Positions, Everyone!

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a literary/film character in a leadership position
Here is another puzzle that really came about as I was filling in a non-Meta crossword. "Hmm", I mused. "I'll bet with a little work this could be a meta!" It turns out I was right.
More than a few of you saw it during testing: Cap'n Rick, Wendy, Whimsy, Peter and Al Sisti.
It was not a bad puzzle before I sent it to Peter and Al, but Al came up with a meta answer that was not just good, but inspired. Any of you who say "how clever" at the end (and I hope there are a bunch) are really saying it to Al.
So, on with the puzzle. The meta answer is a literary/film character in a leadership position (that is the Sistinspiration I spoke of). I would put this at a solid 2.5 or perhaps 3 due to the final twist.
There will be nudges starting Wednesday. The initial ones will be the patently obvious and they will get more and more focused over time.
Nudge Day:
Nudge 1] Given the title (yep there that is again) are there any clues that suggest positions?
Nudge 2] Once you find all of them (11) then you have to do something, but that should be obvious
Nudge 3] So, that is the first part done - what did that give you?
Nudge 4] Given what you have been doing all puzzle, and with the derived phrase and the meta prompt, what does that tell you about what the answer should be
Nudge 5] Let's just say that this should give you license to kill this puzzle
THE REVEAL There were 11 theme answers, each with a "position" in their name (such as Speaker of the House vis-a-vis the Presidency; second in ___). If you took the letter referred to (in the cited example it would be second in line or I) you would eventually spell out FIRST OF MANY. Then the last step was taking the M (the first of many) who was the film/literary character leading the MI6 in the James Bond films.

WOW! I'd almost forgotten about this puzzle, Tom! Really fun, even the second time around.

What was the original prompt and answer. Even in this one, I was hoping for Peter Lorre, but the prompt says "character" not portrayer. Having seen exactly zero James Bond movies and having read that same number of Bond books, I had to ask Mr. G. Quick solve and many wonderful clues. Nice way to start the week.

The prompt was; "What most meta solvers want to be" and the answer was to be "First of Many", but Al's comment on M made it soooo much better.

Great meta answer. It had me thinking for a bit, wondering exactly what you were looking for. And then it hit me! Thanks, Dr Tom. Nice way to start my week.

had to reveal to get one letter (I tried going through the alphabet to fill in BDS? at SE? (M). Had to google to understand the across-entry once I revealed (I know, I know… so naive). Must admit I also googled “First of Many” to see who starred (ha!) — and it actually is the name of a short film. Then SMH and said “OH of course, FIRST of M-A-N-Y is M!”. Who is and will always be M, to me.

Well seems I whipped you into shape on that one answer. BDSM has actually come up in several puzzles (it has a useful bunch of "end" letters), but of course has not been clued that way. I chuckled for a long time on that one.

got step 1 fairly quickly, then spent some time trying figure out step 2, then figured out step 2 without realizing it for a bit. :D "OK, so it should be something signified by M, but what do I do with....oooooh" :)

Saw it a while back, I guess. Looking somewhat different now it seems, and lots of fun upon realization of "M." Thanks, guys!

Yep and at that time it only spelled out First of M and you were supposed to infer many (the prompt was "What meta solvers hope to be"). One of your suggestions was to go ahead and make it FIRST OF MANY and that, ala Robert Frost. made all the difference. Without that the "have the answer be M" could not have worked. This meta process is indeed a process.

Btw - got distracted by “OR” appearing in all 4 of the 9-letter grid entries. Thought for sure their Positioning was going to be relevant…

Got a PM nudge from Dr. Tom that basically forced me into the correct answer. Then I googled "M" plus "First of Many" to understand what was meant. Not being familiar with the Bond series outside of the original books/derived movies, I otherwise would never have gotten past my initial guess of "James Bond". Well constructed and devious.
