Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a health-related term
Happy New Year! If you're like me, you took time at the end of 2023 to review the year and set resolutions for 2024. Starting fresh with new goals felt empowering, but one week in and we're already slipping, failing to follow through. Not surprising since statistically over 90% of New Year's resolutions are abandoned within the first few months.
Whether you want to quit a bad habit, complete an unfinished project, or get your body in shape with a new diet or gym routine, mindfulness and life balance are key factors for success.
Regardless of resolutions, good health is important to maintain. If you fail in some area, it's never too late to make a change. Be mindful, keep moving forward, and don't give up! I guess that's good advice for meta solving, too. Good luck!

I liked this one! Being a chemist, I immediately thought “FE” for “iron”… but there was only 1 in the grid! But then I saw the clues that you so nicely indicated… Nice start to the week! Now on to those pesky resolutions…. Thanks, Darth!
          • Darth constructor · 2024-01-08T16:44:22.675Z
Yep, I needed to highlight those clues for the non-chemists. Otherwise, FOOD SUPPLEMENTS providing "essential minerals" probably wouldn't have been enough help. ;) Thanks for solving!

Thanks! Do the Fe*-clued entries do something? It's HAEMO, which is promising, but then just V?
              • Darth constructor · 2024-01-08T16:37:09.195Z
I accepted IRON DEFICIENCY, but yes, the answer to the meta actually requires closer observation of those marked clues and six other grid entries.

Lol. Thanks, Mike! FENGSHUI just happened. One of my test solvers thought it was saying to rearrange certain letters, which led to the answer, but the order comes from a different approach. ;)

Very nice. We don't do too much with iron in organic, but enough that it didn't take long to see what the starred clues had in common. :)

Yeah, I think highlighting the clues might have made it too easy. Rather do that than to make it too hard and have potential solvers abandon it.

As is often the case for me, I lucked into a meta solution without quite getting all the steps… explanation or hints appreciated (or pointers to the same)!
                                        • Darth constructor · 2024-01-09T04:53:57.009Z
Usually the puzzle title is a hint along with patterns found in clues or answers in the grid. In this case, putting together the title "Pumping Iron" and the clue for 36A that mentions "pills that provide essential minerals" along with the 6 starred clues that begin with Fe (the chemical symbol for Iron) might suggest an answer related to iron supplements. If you make a list of the 6 "Fe" words in the starred clues and study them carefully, you should find there are similarities that match with 6 answers in the grid and when put in order of appearance spell out the answer to the meta. If you got here, then you already know what that 6-letter answer is. ;)

Hmmm, I’ll have to go back and do it that way! I got “anemia” by taking the next letter after “FE” in the clues ( loosely taking the “supplement” hint). The third letters in the FE words are NMEIAA which i anagramed to “ANEMIA”.
                                            • Sendhil Revuluri 🤓2:39 · 2024-01-10T00:06:52.998Z

Well that was a ride on the Ferrous Wheel! You can't throw all that IRON around and suggest you are pumping it without my mind going to the answer. I have spent so much time on this simple, but surprisingly dangerous, condition. Any number of disease states are exacerbated substantially by it. The "fix" is simple but unliked since it inevitably messes with your "innards" one way or another. Thank you for testing my metal...

Looks like I solved it the way you intended (starred clues first words consist of FE, +a grid entry… highlight those grid entries and their first letters in grid order spell ANEMIA. I thought at first we were going to be adding (pumping in) FE or IRON to some grid entries to get synonyms of other grid entries! This was a fun twist.
                                            • Darth constructor · 2024-01-10T21:06:44.122Z
Awesome! You know in the construction of it I had tried different ideas, and your idea was among them. I even thought about expressions and compound nouns that contained iron. When I finally went with FE+words, it was rather limiting. Of course, NCES was going to be hard so I intentionally placed it close to HEMS to see if that might help. btw, if you ever have ideas for metas, feel free to suggest a collaboration. My daughter gave me an idea for one, which I have just finished, and it will be a lot of fun. My goal for the new year is to produce one a month. We'll see if I follow through. :D

Whew! That was a tricky, yet fun one. Can I ask, since answers are case sensitive, do you always use lowercase, or at least with anything that isn't a proper noun? I input so many duplicates not knowing if they're all lowercase, all caps, or first letter caps. (I haven't the faintest why meta answers would be set up to be case sensitive on this website. How is that supposed to enhance the puzzle experience? 😭) Thanks for a fun puzzle.

I think lower case works best, but the constructor can put in alternate answers. Maybe I should add ANEMIA all caps, if it didn't work for you. Thanks for letting me know.

I was trying lowercase versions of guesses first, so I got anemia without getting to see whether ANEMIA would be accepted. I assume it wouldn't be accepted, given the note about answers being case sensitive, but not sure.

I just checked by using all caps on the MEOW today. It wasn't a problem. Crosshare also states that it is not sensitive to case, space, or punctuation.

Where did I put my eyeballs when reading that all these times? So strange. Well, better to have gotten a little egg on my face than to have a nonsensical feature.

I thought the note specified that answers are not case sensitive. I’ve entered answers in all caps and initial caps, and they’ve always been accepted either way
