Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a 4-letter dish, the specialty of a region very much not located in the middle of 5 across
It's funny how these puzzles come together. It starts with an idea; the idea is developed; the meta mechanism components are sorted out; the grid is selected; other things occur to you; then you clue the whole thing; and then months later you find a spelling error and have to redo part of the grid. As a result, there's lots going on in this "week 1" puzzle - so much so, that it's probably more of a "week 2" or even "week 3" puzzle! The answer to the meta is a 4-letter dish, the specialty of a region very much not located in the middle of 5 across. (Google will absolutely be needed to confirm the meta answer!) Answer & explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=169308#p169308
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$10 gives you access to 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game. You won't quite know what to expect: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, sometimes all of those, and sometimes none! One thing is for sure, these are some of the more creative metas my brain has been able to come up with. And there's more: this time there's a mega-meta!

Sounds yummy! I was sure I was very clever by looking at the middle letters first, but when LENC didn't ring any bells, I figured I'd better go back to the basics. Thanks for the puzzle!

Nice idea, Ben. And awesome construction with the Japanese flag and hidden cities... and I learned a few things about the geography and regional cuisine of Japan. ;)

What the heck is with the picture of the Arch de Triumphe?????

Absolutely nothing other than its a travel picture with an object in the middle of the frame. :D

Got Tokyo Rose right away but took me about two hours later to get Kobe Bryant.
Did you know that there's an author named Marilyn Osaka who wrote a book called "Mango Kitty". 10 minutes after Kobe Bryant and realizing I was just going to have to google every feasible clue I google Naomi Osaka (who admittedly is almost certainly much more reasonably a house-hold name to just about everyone on the planet but me).
          • woozy 13:31 · 2024-06-05T01:36:13.690Z
Anyway the construction was really nice if I hadn't said so before. The three out of four themers shouldn't have stumped me as long as they did.

I was slightly worried given that the overlap in the venn diagram of people who know about wartime propaganda and the people who know about Phoebe Bridger is rather small! ;-)
              • woozy 13:31 · 2024-06-05T16:51:14.564Z
I don't think your worries were allayed in any way.
But I once I knew what had to be done I knew I had to google and the Phoebe Bridger's specificity seemed like a reasonable candidate. More confusing to me was wondering if a Phoebe Bridger crossing Lisa Kudrow was something. It was isolated and irrellevant to the japanese city theme but... we've had metas based on less.

Had the right idea from the beginning but took a wrong turn! Thanks

Nice one, thank you Ben! The Japanese cities stuck right out to me but I'm an idiot and never looked for them to be alternate answers. Thankful for the nudges!
              • MatthewL 🤓7:49 · 2024-06-05T13:49:19.483Z
Oy. Saw the cities right away, but couldn't make anything of it. Needed the nudges. Should have seen the mechanism, because I initially put TOKYO in for SALLY. Oh well -- thanks for the puzzle, Ben!
                • KayW 🤓7:09 · 2024-06-05T15:53:11.700Z
Wow!! What a meta. I needed that last nudge - it didn't occur to me that there could be alternate answers for all those cities. But SALLY/TOKYO ROSE should have been screaming at me. Thank the interwebgods for wikipedia disambiguation pages LOL. Well done, Ben! (as opposed to RARE, my not at all optimistic first submission based on a red center. I knew that couldn't be the name of a dish.)
                  • DrTom 4s · 2024-06-05T21:05:46.111Z
Well I solved it using the nudges, and I needed them all. I had all the rest of course including the villainous herrings😉 I am a little distressed with myself because I distinctly remember thinking to myself 'AXIS SALLY, wow who knew that one, I only knew TOKYO ROSE?' Hopefully that would have tipped me ot the way across the moat, and if not, when I finally got my head out of my stomach and looked for a different KOBE that should have done it. Luckily OSAKA shows up in plenty of puzzles, btu I have to tell you, I got the last letter only by backsolving and looking for what might fit as an alternate since I needed an I. A track on an album by an artist I doubt I have ever hears (I got ICU only with the crosses) was never going to register. So I am afraid I will have to just float around the moat, not having been able to cross. I guess I am going ot have to get cleverer in my construction if I am going to keep pace with Ben and Phil

I sort of knew that relying on solvers knowing a specific Phoebe Bridger song was going to be a bridge too far! ;-)
                      • DrTom 4s · 2024-06-06T03:51:38.293Z
Goodness, song? For me SHE was a Bridger too far. I don't listen tot that much music and when I do it is usually not very contemporary. I mean I don't even really know any Taylor songs!!! (I know the names of course, but the tunes, that is another story).
However, nothing wrong with the puzzle, just the solver. I SHOULD have found my way in with SALLY, and I like the clever hiding in plain sight.
                    • HeadinHome 🤓2:14 · 2024-06-06T01:56:04.270Z
So should not have needed those nudges… I knew Osaka was a tennis player and Tokyo Rose is what came to mind immediately from the 20A clue. Kobe should have come to me too, though I would not have known his team, just basketball. Great fun, even using the nudges.
                      • whimsy 18:23 · 2024-06-06T03:24:49.400Z
Saw the cities but that's about it -- definitely needed those nudges! I also misunderstood the meta prompt, thinking the region wasn't to be found in Japan -- now I realize it meant just that it's not in the middle of it. But I did get something right! That I would need google to confirm! 😄 Thanks for the puzzle, Ben!
                        • hoover 3s · 2024-06-06T12:53:46.493Z
I could have written this post! Same here, thought the meta prompt meant we were NOT looking at Japan, then wondered why all the Japanese cities. I don't understand the first nudge, though. "You would have worked out the country that is in focus ... from the downs." Even after reading the nudge and knowing the mechanism, I don't see anything in the downs. Can somebody explain?
                          • benchen71 constructor · 2024-06-06T22:16:16.946Z
I just meant you get JAPAN by filling in the downs.

Needed to google the phoebe clue, but on the other hand the way it was written it seemed like a pretty logical place to find that fourth themer so great job!
                          • Dave C 3s · 2024-06-08T21:51:30.376Z
Just got around to it again. We were on the right track, but couldn't find the alternate clue for Kyoto until doing more googling. The nudges confirmed that we were on the right track.
