Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a dangerous profession
This puzzle is a classic case of morphing. It started as a nice Kitten (Level 1) and I sent it to testers (Cinny, rjy, cindy) who found the usual errors, came back with some helpful comments and a "what about trying this", so I did.
It still is not very hard, but there is a twist that I'll bet catches a lot of people. So, I'll give it a 2.5

Nudge 1] As Admiral Ackbar would say "It's a Trap!"
Nudge 2] Do you recall the most famous brain fear of all? The Pageant (WSJ Dec 29, 2017) https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=363&hilit=pageant#p363
Nudge 3] Why would I put NINE of a particular profession in the puzzle if that wasn't the answer, and even if it was why so many? I mean the top five would have tipped everyone to their common job. Wonder if I was doing anything else with all of those clues or answers.
REVEAL:
Well it starts out pretty straightforward; Nine names of Astronauts in the puzzle at 1,8,22,27,31,45,48,50, and 51 Across. There were some not as well known, but RIDE, GLEN, CARPENTER, WHITE should probably have rung a bell. Then if that didn't help, the clues for the Challenger and Mir (33 and 60 Across) should have.
So, a dangerous profession - ASTRONAUT. BUT, this was a trick! There was a famous meta a few years back that tripped up people because the obvious answer was NOT the obvious answer, it just gave the way to find the REAL answer, which in this case was the first letter of each clue for the Astronaut's names. Taken in their order they spelled TEST PILOT.
Tricky indeed, but I hope fun.

    Awesome puz! Love it! :D

Some of the fill was tough for me but I enjoyed the puzzle. Thanks.

I'm glad I redid the puzzle this morning. Even though I test-solved, the meta answer was new to me. Last I remembered the answer was Sky Diving! 😅

Yes this one had MANY iterations. Glad you dove in!

As you probably anticipated, tried ASTRONAUT first, and then the right answer. Had to be one or the other. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!

(Of course i tried ASTRONAUT first!). Tried finding the first names in puzzle or clues… there was John and Sally in 11D and 21D. And SALARIED was so tantalizingly close to SALLYRIDE I felt sure I was on to something. But nope… just the first-letter-of-clues protocol. I had to look up some of these to see if they maybe were astronauts (unaware of Susan Helms, Vince Brand…). GLENN was the giveaway, then saw COOPER and RIDE immediately. Fun “challenger” !

The answer was originally intended to be ASTRONAUT but my testers encouraged me to be bold and go farther, to somewhere I had never been before - a pageant. I have to say, I LIKED it!!! (that will no doubt bode danger in the future)

I was concerned -- will it be Barbara or Andrew or "Drew" Morgan? Didn't matter! How nice! Very good puzzle that I of course entered ASTRONAUT for at first, knowing full well that I most likely hadn't twisted enough. Always pays to be fully twisted! Thanks, Tom!

Twisting is important! I want everyone to twist again, like they did last summer....

A delightful puzzle when you've Bean Coopered up inside to beat the heat... a Brandy for me please!

Needed the nudges, because even though I didn't come close to falling for the trap, it was useful to know there were nine, since I missed one (which is funny since it was Sally RIDE, one of the three I'd actually heard of). Also the subtle tip to look at the clues helped, though I'm not sure why I didn't try that yesterday. Didn't love the google hunt for all the names, but the idea was fun, thanks. :)

Once I got a shove from the good Doctor on step 1 it was pretty smooth. Really enjoyed it. In every DrTom puzzle I always have one favorite clue.. this time it was 41D.

American astronauts, not a category I’d willingly choose in Jeopardy! But finally escaped the gravitational pull of my ignorance.

Nice one, Tom! Of course I had to try ASTRONAUT first, even though I KNEW that was the trap you warned us of. Was glad to see from the nudges that I found all the astronauts -- embarrassed to say that I was not familiar with all of them. And then further nudged to the very logical conclusion an answer, Fun and educational -- thanks!
