Horror Movie Trope II (Meta)

· By benchen71 · Published 2022-10-25T05:00:20.588Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a horror movie trope
It's that time of year again. To mark the occasion here's another meta puzzle that seeks to illustrate a horror movie trope. Nudges are here: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=110075#p110075
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

    Fun Puzzle. Thanks.
Had to google to find the names of tropes though.
    • dplass 32s · 2022-10-28T16:50:29.241Z
Weirdly i "got" all the incomplete across answers from the down answers so I didn't even know anything was missing until Ben's hints...
    • Laura M 🤓12:24 · 2022-10-25T10:03:51.846Z
Actually I had no idea if this would be right but I thought it was a likely answer! I did see the SCAREs in the corners, but from there to the answer was a bit of a... leap, so I suspect I missed a step :-)
      • benchen71 constructor · 2022-10-25T10:46:48.095Z
There are four grid entries that are missing SCARE. They have jumped into the corners to hide!
        • Laura M 🤓12:24 · 2022-10-26T08:28:54.197Z
Wow, I am stupid as well as ignorant! I never heard of any of those entries with or without the SCAREs, but you'd think that I could have tried looking them up, particularly since this is a meta and they were a little odd-looking... Excellent puzzle (which I shouldn't have tried to solve at 2 AM), thanks!
          • benchen71 constructor · 2022-10-26T09:47:50.306Z
If you were able to fill in the grid with just the downs for those entries, you did really well!
            • Katiedid 🤓6:37 · 2022-10-27T16:56:41.913Z
My experience is exactly the same as Laura M's. I'm glad to see there is a reason for the jump! I should have looked up those weird entries too.

There were SCAREs in the corners? Totally missed that.

Great puzzle to start the day! It wasn't until after I got the meta answer that I noticed the scares in the corners.

Well, it literally jumped out at me😂 I guess this just goes to show that Metas care if you let them.

Also needed to google for a list of horror movie tropes. Next time how about the evil doll that comes to life!

I've got something slightly different planned for Halloween 2023. You may have to wait a while for "Horror Movie Trope III" :D

My first google search revealed "mirror scares" but upon further reading I stumbled on the answer.

Got the two parts (SCARES leaving clues and hiding in corners) but needed to google to find the actual trope term. But how are you going to cox them back?
                                • rjy 3s · 2022-10-26T15:07:20.444Z
Totally missed the jump destinations in the corners... clever! I got "jump scares" by simply jumping over the scares. Cool puzzle, Ben!
                                  • benchen71 constructor · 2022-10-26T21:39:11.282Z
I think that was my initial plan. But then I thought it would be more fun to have the SCAREs hiding in the corners.

Nudges helped! I never thought to google the “ACTUAL” answers to those clues… just accepted what fit in the grid! Duh!! Good one, Ben!
