If we can't figure the theme to this meta let's table it for the time being

Meta Prompt
The answer is a key adjective for the theme of this and many other metas
CAVEAT WARNING: so for better or worse CrossHare doesn't allow you to save drafts of puzzles so to construct a new puzzle you must either complete and publish or abandon and delete you old draft. As a result one might find oneself 90% done with a puzzle and deciding it's not publish-worthy but you've gone too far to just throw it away. I came back to constructing after months to find this one in my cache. For various reasons, I don't think it's worthwhile but .... SHEESH.... I had done so much months ago.... so here it is.
This was conceived in response to a WSJ meta contest where I thought the mechanism could be taken just a little further. Unfortunately it is otherwise the exact same mechanism (I think, it was so long ago I might have forgotten). Also unfortunately it is one of those one where when you construct the key half dozen or so key entries it seems obvious but when you have to add the 58 or so extra entries it'll wash out to invisibility. (Hint: find the "weird clues" ... which become less weird as I scramble to add the 50+ clues that have nothing to do with the meta....)
Anyway I've made no really proofing since the goal of publishing is to get this out so I can make the next. On the other hand, like all my children ... it pains me to dismiss or cut it.

Got it. Clever theme, but (unless I'm missing something) O->Oxygen->8->O, when it should be R. Also Abel was the victim, not the murderer (if you believe in that sort of thing).

Thanks for solving. I didn't the bulk of this month's ago so there may indeed be errors.

Argh. You are right about Oxygen. Don't know if its worth fixing. One neat thing about this metanism is I have lots of flexibility in choose which clues to use for the metanism. (But I need a clue beginning with F, Nb, or Cs (and I'd prefer to avoid two letter abreviations)

Okay, fixed the Oxygen problem. Kind of kludgey but okay.... It drops an obvious hint at what is otherwise a pretty hard meta.

Nice fix. I got this one before the changes. It was still a fun puzzle!

About the only thing I remember about making the grid was the "O Octoupus, I begs...." I hate to diminish its punch.

FYI, you can export .puz files in the Crosshare editor (even for an incomplete grid), and then import them later to continue making a crossword.

Oh... didn't know that. (Thought you could only do complete ones.) May take advantage of that if I can ever get organized enough.

Such a fun puzzle! Not to beat a dead horse, but I am so jealous of you smarties who can make such an impressive puzzle with a complex meta on top... alas such talents are not for everybody but I guess thats what makes you lot special
