GO for THE GOLD

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is someone associated with gold.
Hey, it's Darth here, and I'm excited to take part in "Smooth Sailing Sunday". This puzzle was conceived four years ago as a "wannabe" meta that never fully materialized. This year it crawled out of hiding and got a much-needed makeover...although it still carries an element of the original idea! Need I say more?
Here are some nudges if you're newish to meta solving. They are meant as an S.O.S. (what Cap'n Rick calls "InSSStant Nudges" if you need help right away):
Nudge 1: If you're new to meta solving, general advice is to use your powers of observation. Look for patterns or a common element in the grid.
Nudge 2: Besides pointing to the theme, the title of a meta puzzle can be cryptic or instructive. Sometimes both.
Nudge 3: Long answers in the grid are often helpful to study, especially if they are "themers" (i.e., share the puzzle's theme).
Nudge 4: Sometimes there are clues that offer direct hints, such as 25D in this puzzle. This hint may be cryptic or instructive.
Nudge 5: Sometimes clues offer indirect hints, such as 15A in this puzzle. These are often more subtle or cryptic in nature.
Nudge 6: I did say this puzzle carries an original "element" from my earlier version, right? This element may appear "periodically" in the grid.
Nudge 7: I tend toward a gestalt approach when constructing metas. Among the multiple cues, I'd love to know your path to the answer.

Looked above the gold. Thanks, Darth.
    • Darth constructor · 2024-04-07T13:06:01.188Z
Yep. That's supposed to be "gold lining" I guess. =) Thanks for solving, Bob.

Saw the "take two" nudge and went with that. Thanks!
      • Darth constructor · 2024-04-07T15:29:02.162Z
Awesome. Originally, GO for THE GOLD was supposed to mean "take two" letters after "THE"... but that seemed a bit silly and gave too much focus to THE. Thanks for solving, Hector.

SSSolved, NNN (no nudges needed)! Thanks, Darth.

Ha! I'm liking this "NNN" thing. Perhaps the opposite would be "HHH" - Hints Highly Helpful. 😄

Looked at the nudges, but obv already had all that info. Spent some time trying to swap GO in for the AU, or removing the AU, or taking two letters using various other methods, or other interpretations of TAKE TWO. Thought for a while it might be things wrapped in AU, but that dead ended quickly. Also spend a while distracted by the years in the theme clues. Eventually saw that the THEs and AUs were connected, but didn't connect that to a lining. Finally just happened to look at the letters above the AU, and voila. Thanks. :)

Love the noodling, Alan! After cluing, I realized there were at least 5 clues that contained "au" words (author, sausage, Nassau, etc.)... Some things just happen. :D
                  • ajk 🤓7:33 · 2024-04-08T15:26:41.013Z

No nudges needed, but never saw the AU until reading the comments. Just took the first 2 letters after the THE, based on the TAKE TWO clue. Fun one Darth!

Saw the AU right away but wonders "can you have a meta with just three themers"? RAA?...
There's always the issue with starting a meta after the nudges have been posted just how stuck you are going to be before you look. ... well, with just three AU I was in a "well, I tried one thing and got nothing left". The first nudge "yeah, yeah I'm not new to metas" but surprisingly the second nudge was enough to see the THEs.
                    Fun puzzle.

Well, that works. We're trying to decide whether having nudges available from the beginning is good practice or too much of a temptation. I'd say, you gave it a good shot and most of the nudges were just reminders of what you liked had already noticed. Thanks for solving. =)

That's awesome! =) Well, swimming is definitely at the top of my list of favorite Olympic sports to watch. A long time Michael Phelps fan.

I pounced on the AU trick right away (maybe subconsciously because of my name and Mr. 65A's?) But then I wondered for about 1.7 seconds whether there was a MI episode that Mr. Phelps participated in that involved gold. Duh! Thanks, Darth!

Lol. That would make a good one for the XWord Rabbit! Even if only for 1.7 seconds. haha

How cool to have a Mission: Impossible themed puzzle! A reference, no doubt, to that episode where they stole the gold by melting and reshaping it. Actually, seems like the did that several times, so very fitting to use gold as the mechanism. 😉

I guess that works. Michael Phelps, of course, was the Olympic swimmer that took all the gold. ;)
