It's All in the Game

Meta Prompt
It's good to do this in 25 Across, bad in 18 Across.
If you can’t find any themes or common elements in the grid, there’s always another place to look. . . . . . the clues. Do any of them seem convoluted when much simpler ways of cluing the entry are at hand? Some of the clues have an element in common. That element has nothing to do with the words or letters in the clues. It’s an element of crossword cluing. There are ten of them. The initial letters of the entries for those clues spell out the answer. For 25A, the answer is literal; for 18A, it’s more metaphorical.

Inferential solve (guess), went back and spelled out! Thank you Bird Lives!

Same. Suitable Sunday substitute, wherein not many a tear had to fall... Thanks, Bird!

Inferential solve for me as well. Don't see how to spell it out.

OK, just saw the metanism elegance, nice! I did NOT have to guess it turns out, even though I did (educated guess of course in formed by your very apropos prompt) I should have guessed with all those "fill in the blank" spots. Good job!!

Fun one Jay. I sat there for a while trying to think of the rules. CHEAT came to mind, but that may because of the cutthroat way my family played Scrabble. I was sitting there and said to myself, "Tom you have no idea do you, you are...HEY, wait one second! By the way, the woman's shoe...I wanted it so very much to be thong. The darn T fit, but alas.

For a moment, I couldn't think of the answer. Seems like there's another phrase for that but I can't think of it right now.

Oh wow, I completely missed the metanism, and just based my answer on the theme clues... I will never understand how you geniuses do it, you're all so amazing

The answer phrase seems to come from Elizabethan times in describing lotteries, wherein each participant's name is written on a slip in one bin, and each prize on a slip in a second together with enough blank slips to match the number of participants; then each participant is paired with a prize or a blank. It seems the figurative potential of the phrase wasn't long in being noticed. From the OED: 1605 Husbands are like lotts in the lottery: you may drawe forty blankes before you finde one that has any prise in him. J. Marston, Dutch Courtezan iii. i. sig. D4

Guessed the answer. Now to back solve!
                      • Cindy Heisler 2s · 2023-11-05T17:26:19.832Z
Inferred the answer. Now I'm trying to backsolve to see how to get it correctly. Thanks, Jay!
                        • ajk 🤓3:24 · 2023-11-05T17:30:52.560Z
Took me an extra 8 minutes to find the mechanism after I inferred the answer. Which is funny because in retrospect the hint in the 25A clue seems like it should point more directly the the mechanism than the answer. Very cool stuff, thanks.
                          • whimsy 🤓5:25 · 2023-11-05T20:20:25.079Z
I had the right idea, but that NAP between the two themers made me wish there were ZZZ's somewhere in the grid. I was also looking to do something that could incorporate two tiles or squares. Foolish me! Because the actual mechanism, which I got with the push of a few nudges, reminds me a bit of a puzzle I've been trying to pull off. 🤪 Very good one, BL! Can always count on you for some fun wordplay!

Clever puzzle. I first focused on quotes instead of blanks, but I got it. I used the nudges though!
                                • KayW 🤓4:27 · 2023-11-05T21:32:27.591Z
WOW. that is clever. And pretty much what I was doing regarding this meta before the nudges LOL. I had to reread all the nudges twice to make sense of them. And that's on me, not on you nor the nudges - an excellent meta!

The prompt was hidden under my clipboard clip and I remembered it wrong. I saw “par” in jeopardy and “crab” in scrabble and thought that worked out fine with the title and NOPE. Real method was much better.
