Meta Prompt
The 8 letter answer is something known for its storied ability to change people
I am going to beg for forgiveness up front...
I have had this meta waiting for this time period for quite a while. Problem is that it is, I have been told, rather challenging. I did not want to post it on a week 4 MG and WSJ (though WSJ was pretty straightforward) so I held it and did "Let My People Go" instead. But since I do not want to keep it another year here you are.
It is a probably at least a Puma, though obviously if you catch the idea and internal nudges it will be much easier. I will be posting the nudges Friday but, more likely than not, sooner. Give it a try though, it is not as scary as it seems....but please don't hesitate to ask for help, I don't want it to turn you into a screaming maniac.

Nudges: (from "were you trying to get my attention" to "hey stop shoving")
Nudge 1] I said I had to release this around this time, and there are actually TWO temporal reasons I had to
Nudge 2] There are "nudge" clues throughout, 39A is one of them
Nudge 3] ...15A is another
Nudge 4] ...and 61D is yet another
Nudge 5] Finally, 21 and 23A as a pair are nudges
Nudge 6] There are also a few Easter eggs, like 36A
Nudge 7] ...and the combination of 1A and 1D, but you will have to, as suggested, think of other examples
Nudge 8] The graphic also has an Easter Egg/Nudge but you might have to go back to a previous MEOW..."Remember old MEOWs, what in the name of God does he think he is doing!!!"
Nudge 9] Finally, there is 59D which ought to tip everyone off
Nudge 10] Is this difficulty going to be the norm for DrTom or is he just going through a phase?
Nudge 11] Let's build from the nudges: Take 39A and use 15A to create something. Now, use 61D to find what you need, and be sure to incorporate 21 and 23A to help you get oriented. Oh, and if you don't know the "point" 39A refers to, that word contains the only instance of a letter in the grid which is incidentally smack in the middle of the grid
So, last day and I thought I'd put out one last big hint/nudge/downright shove:
Hint Nudge Downright Shove] You have an entry that tells you where to start. The start point is a 15A from a 39A - which could not B any clearer - and each stopping point is a 61D until you get to the END. That will spell out, graphically and literally, what 36A and 59D tried to clue you to.
Reveal Day!
How was this meant to be solved? There are several clues in the GRID:15A is very oddly worded and gives you a radius of four (4)39A describes a fixed circular route around a fixed point, and the point…it is the single B in the entire grid and is smack dab in the middle. So starting at the B draw a radius of 4 to the F. How do you know that, well 21A tells you that is the start of the game. Use a compass or a pencil on a string or whatever works for you and draw your circle. Simply going out 4 in every direction is not reasonable (nor is it a radius) because that gives you a square. With the circle completed look at every 45 degree segment (Clue 61A) and starting with the F, go around the circle until the END (Clue 23A) and you’ll find FULL MOON in the squares the circle bisects.

Nice one Tom! You made it sound scarier than it was. Happy Halloween

Josh, great to hear from you and glad you liked it. Actually it is noon and the puzzle has been out for 4 hours with 2 solvers. I think I may have gotten this one's difficulty correct. I had a LOT of clues scattered through the grid but you had to put them together. The WOLF one was a concession to solvability because if you think on it for a minute you see the connection with the change during the full moon. Did you catch the 1A and 1D Easter egg?
Thanks for solving and I hope all is well with you.
      • Madhatter5 3s · 2023-11-02T16:10:08.579Z
No, I didn't catch the Easter egg. RES and RIPEN? What does it mean?
        • Hector 3s · 2023-11-02T17:34:32.914Z
Satisfied = FULL and Sign of disrespect = MOON, I think
    • Hector 3s · 2023-11-01T14:56:51.928Z
Were in the world did you get this concept? Thanks!

This just came to me when I was in one of my "I can't keep having the same, common, simple mechanism every time" moods. I came up with 4 or 5 different things but really liked this one. When I sent it to testers they all commented on its difficulty and gave suggestions for easing the terror. Most of those were incorporated in the various nudge clues and Easter Eggs. It is never a good thing to leave my mind to its own devices.
Thank you for solving! At least now, with two solvers, I know it can be done.
      • MatthewL 🤓7:35 · 2023-11-01T16:02:28.776Z
Pure guess. Still not sure what the mechanism is, so now to try and backsolve.
        • DebbieC 12:55 · 2023-11-01T19:13:02.048Z
Ditto. Lovely grid but early on, FULL MOON popped into my mind as a fitting answser. Had to finish the grid to submit, but still can't see the mechanism. WOLF, WHOLE, SATED, etc. but no consistent metanism appears. Would love an explanation. Thanks!
        • rjy 3s · 2023-11-01T16:23:59.112Z
Nice one, DrTom, and perfectly fair, no apologies needed. Good signposts with a nice thematic answer. Enjoyed it!
          • MatthewL 🤓7:35 · 2023-11-01T16:49:48.160Z
Okay, I see the answer circling ORBIT, but still not sure as to the why, unless it's just follow the instructions in 21A and draw a nice circle until you get to the N in 23A (end of the journey, I guess). I should say, I just guessed it off of the title, prompt and the clue and grid entry at 59D. Fun puzzle though. Especially love the clue and answer at 25D. Thanks Tom!
            • DrTom constructor · 2023-11-01T17:13:57.716Z
If you go a radius of four (clue 15A) out from the center (39A = Fixed circular route around a central point) you get a big circle in the middle that looks like a full moon. BUT, then you go (61D = 45 degree segment of a circle) and you will find, starting at the top of the circle, that the circle goes through the letters F U L L M O O N in order.
Glad you liked 25D, I enjoyed cluing it. Is it fair to bet that the L stands for Lewandowski or some similar Central European or Baltic name (like mine)?
              Thanks for solving!

Solved, but not sure of the mechanism. I need to backsolve. 59D is what gave it to me. Thanks, Dr. Tom.

I see it now with a little help from Boharr. I knew 15A had to be part of it. Very clever mechanism!!

I'm hoping 15A does not prove to be everyone's arc enemy...
                    Thanks for solving

Guessed this just from the meta prompt above, before even solving the puzzle. Now to figure out the intended mechanism.
                      • Laura M 🤓8:50 · 2023-11-01T18:56:45.112Z
Excellent! 15A meant what I thought it did :-)

The fact that there were exactly 26 O's sent me on a prolonged wild goose chase which returned goose eggs!
I got a nudge to use geometry (which I actually started but only went part way) but used the WOLF man method.
While filling the grid, I noticed "fo(u)r a radius" in the clue but assumed it was supposed to be "for(e) a radius" as in forearm. DUH! The man is a doctor and would surely use that if he meant it. It never dawned on me to use that cue.
                          • DrTom constructor · 2023-11-02T02:20:33.683Z
Wow, I never even counted them, but of course 26 is a big mechanistic thing in puzzles. I thought sure that everyone would see fo(u)r a radius and think. " boy that is an odd clue". Actually I cannot even take credit for this very brilliant "nudge clue". It was one of my testers, and I think Tamara, that came up with that.

I just guessed based on the prompt, I figured orbit was important, but I was trying to trace a square ring around the grid, not an actual circle, and I definitely missed the radius-4 and the 45 degree hints... this metanism and construction go way way way above my tiny head, thanks for sharing your genius, ever wishing I could experience a tiny fraction, but I know that'll only happen in a blue moon

I was going around and around in circles (but obvious not the exactly correct orbital path) looking for potions, spells, charms, magic goblets (mugs!) etc. until the big, bad guy was pointed out to me. 😆 Knew what to look for then. Excellent, fun and well-rounded puzzle!

needed all but the last nudge. Definitely out of phase with this one. Tried the radius/orbit thing, but I was thinking of the B as a dot, meaning I needed 4 squares from there. Also wasn't sure whether to skip or count black squares. All of which conspired to obscure the answer. But I got there in the end. Cool idea, thanks.

Glad you stuck with it! Obviously you do need 4 squares, but only to the N,S,E,W since it is a circle. I can see how the black squares might have messed you up since there was one at each of the cardinal points and that circle would yield gibberish (which unfortunately many people have gotten by thinking that they had to go out 4 squares to both cardinal and ordinal points). Hopefully this was just a phase I was going through....
