I'm Game - IMPLIED

· By DrTom · Published 2024-08-14T11:30:29.928Z

Meta Prompt
The answer, implied by the meta, is a famous dog
Well, he's at it again, two different forms of the same puzzle. I created the IMPLIED version and had it tested and it worked well, but one of my testers was tentative with an answer because of the implied nature. I know how some people just don't like implicit answers (I often don't myself) so I thought, OK, I'll make an EXPLICIT version.
I had that tested and my testers (whimsy, Benchen71, lbray53, pchow13) said they liked it but that they had no real feelings about which one I should go with. So, what the heck since both were made I'll post both. I don't think there is a degree of difficulty difference between them, both should play at a level 2 I'd imagine.
Kitten
*CALICO
Persian
Puma
Lion

NUDGES:
IMPLICIT
Nudge 1] I know people often "link" clues, but I don't do it that often - yet I did it three times at least in this puzzle, how odd
Nudge 2] Have you ever been to summer camp, vacation bible school or just have kids? Is there a song that is quite popular and involves a lot of clapping?
Nudge 3] 19A and 21D are both Easter eggs. Perhaps 19A more universally so, but with 21D there was always something in the areas I lived that got people into the church hall more often than mass!

REVEAL:
For the Implicit solve people needed to notice all of the “linked clues” (17, 18 and 47 ACROSS)
Each one of those gave a well-known Bingo term: BLACK OUT, FOUR CORNERS, FREE SPACE
19A had a reference in it to a necessity for “game” play. Using the title word in the clue should probably have lit a light, and the answer was CARD, as in BINGO card
21D was a reference to the fact that so many BINGOs are held in church halls, and there may have been some area bias there because, although that is what I grew up with, I’m not sure it is universal
All of that, plus the title that clearly mentions a game and the answer that was to be a famous dog, I hoped that would invoke “..there was a farmer had a dog and BINGO was his name O…” and lead you to the name BINGO.

Not a game I'm very familiar with, but just having a vague idea was enough to solve. Thanks, DrTom!

Well that is the trouble with the Implied version, it demands you know something of the game of Bingo. Now had you done the Explicit it might have been easier because, although the answer is the same, the mechanism is completely different and maybe brings up something better known? Thanks for filling your card!

My point was that although I don't know much about Bingo, I was still able to solve the meta. You've left excellent clues to get there! :D
    • Bird Lives 5s · 2024-08-14T15:41:04.236Z
My first thought was that the meta had something to do with solitaire. I knew that Free Cell is a form of solitaire and I thought that the others might be as well. If so, then that led to Klondike, which is also a form of solitaire. Klonikie is in the Yukon. So the answer would have to be Yukon King. But I pressed on.
I knew that "five in a row" could refer to the Japanese game gomoku narabe (like Connect Four, but requiring a string of five and played with stones on a go board). That didn't seem promising either. So I Googled all the terms and discovered that they were used in Bingo. I had not been exposed to this classic song when I was a child but learned it only when I was accompanying my own child to various play groups. It turns out to have been good for one thing -- solving this meta.

I'm sure I missed the point here and will do the explicit one to figure it out. I just tried to think of a game where you black out spaces that also has a free space. Bingo (Farmer's dog) came to mind so I guessed, but I suppose I did figure it out. Now to see what else I missed. Very nice puzzle(s)!

I was totally lost, and then saw FREE SPACE, and took a wild guess at what turned out to be the right answer. Now I see all the other clever clues that I totally ignored. Fun one, Tom!

Thanks, DrTom! I completed both grids but solved implicitly. Lots of fun as aways!

Think I would have needed that bit at the end of nudge 3 for this version. So thanks for making the explicit one that I eventually solved sans nudges. :)
