I got enough to grok it - now I have to reverse-engineer a bit!

Nice one for (what is for me) a holiday Monday. Thanks!

Good to have you back at puzzle-making, Al. As a fellow old fart, it’s great for me to actually know the cultural references. (Hope you don’t mind the OF reference. In truth, you’re ageless!)

Nice job , Al!

Fun as always. Thanks, Al.

Very nice! Great to see you back, Al! Confused at one point because I couldn't count rows -- but then --a big smile!

Nice one! I actually knew how to program in 42D at one point, don't remember much now though...

Very nice symmetry, which allowed me to eliminate "choral". And I love the fact that Usher works in 2 ways. Very well done!

Still, I wish I had checked for unintended possibilities... like "choral" and "earwig"... ooof.
Usher was my first thought when I saw the prompt, but it has taken me this long to backsolve!! Better late than never. Thanks, Al!

Nice to have you back, Al!
Late arrival to the show, so may need one to quickly show me to my seat.

Nice! Took me a while to find the S, even after it was obvious that the answer was USHER... I kept looking only in that middle column. Doh! I had CHORAL and VENTURE initially, too, which threw me off. Really fun puzzle!

I had the mechanism from the onset, but finding the words you had in mind was difficult, especially since CHORAL fit so well (as a performance-related word) with COSTUME, STAGEHAND, AND OVERTURE. But "all's well that ends well".
Alex Sisti constructor · 2022-10-15T00:21:01.307Z
Yeah, I missed Choral -- which was fitting -- and Earwig, which wasn't (except for the ones around the smushed jujubees or Junior Mints).
