Constructor's Note
Oh boy, it was a long day putting this insanity into a grid without any ridiculously unusual words!

Whoa, very impressive! I had to guess a few to get GOA
1DPart of India popular with tourists[---]
    /OWAIN
6AGlyndwr, Lord of Glyndyfrdwy (I know, crazy, right?)[-----]
but otherwise very smooth, especially given the constraint!

Thanks, I had a lot of fun constructing it!
    • Duncan Lyle 🤓8:46 · about 1 year ago
I admit that I had to look it up afterwards to understand what you did, but now that I know, a very impressive feat! Well done! (And I learned something new, which is always a plus.)

same i had to look it up also - very impressive given the constraint... you made the clues sound really natural too i didn't even notice anything was missing

Thanks Duncan and Philip, glad you both had fun trying it!

TIL: Taro root = yam :) Fun!
        • jasonwestley constructor · about 1 year ago
Thanks! I'm happy your kind words fit this crossword's motif 😁

Liked the puzzle ! To clarify, taro is known as yam in Asian cultures but is not technically in the yam/sweet potato family as we know them. I.guess its an Asian yam?

            Brilliant!
            • jasonwestley constructor · about 1 year ago
Thanks 'nana. Sorry to clip your ID short but, you know 🙂

Top work, Jason! I too took on this constraint for a cryptic crossword, so I know your pain. You could post this to /r/Avoid5 - it would gain much acclaim on that forum, indisputably!
              • jasonwestley constructor · about 1 year ago
Thanks kjb (initials OK just in this situation?) I'll look at that forum tomorrow. Was your cryptic grid in UK form? I think filling such a grid might not call for as much work, but fully cryptic hints without you-know-what must vigorously tax your writing skills! You got a link to it?
                • kieranjboyd 5:32 · about 1 year ago
I stick to US forms for making cryptics - I favour including all wordplay parts in my cluing. A link, you ask? A link I shall supply! (Although this link contains fifth glyphs, sorry!) https://kieranjboyd.github.io/puzzles/an-omission.html

Thumbs up! Got most of it down whilst studiously ignoring Word A and Word B. 8A was knotty - didn't know that word until now.
              • Sommersmith 🤓3:26 · about 1 year ago
Grat concpt, grat xcxution. Lov it!

Whoa! My PhD advisor (from a Paris suburb) was a fan of a book akin to 27A
                  27ABook inspiring this crossword[------]
(also avoiding that fifth glyph), known as "A Void" US-side.
                  • jasonwestley constructor · about 1 year ago
Ha! I had a go at including A Void in my grid too, but it wouldn't fit without making it awfully difficult to fill with non-rubbish words. Might try it in a UK-form cryptic :)
                  • Michele G 31:22 · about 1 year ago
Very cool - I had to look it up to see what was going on. Nice, smooth fill. (I accidentally left it open while I had dinner though, so my time is crazy long!)

Good job! What a tough constraint to work with! Didn't find out that your grid was apt too until I was halfway through with it!
