Take a Good Look

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a song from a hit musical
Caution is always advised before embarking on a dangerous endeavor or a new meta (which many would say was the same thing). Today is no different, take a look around and think about what might be going on before you jump in. I am going to say this MIGHT be a level 3 because the mechanism is subtle and the final answer is implicit, not explicit (besides I've been told never to be TOO explicit so these are all SFW).
With those warnings I will leave you to your own devices. Now hop to it and release that poor cat!

Sorry - I posted a nudge earlier in the MEOW that I di not post here, I guess that makes up for the last time when I did the opposite? Anyway...
To the rescue:
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL 1] Look through the clues, do you see any word(s) that are used more than one would assume they should be?
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL 2] What is the puzzle's release date?
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL 3] When you are about to do something dangerous or new what cautionary phrase do people often use?
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL 4] There have not been THAT many SUPER Musicals that ran on Broadway and the East End for years AND had movies, that should narrow it down.
Nudge 5] The puzzle came out on Feb 28th, normally that would be the end of the month..but not this year
Nudge 6] What would Nudge 5 suggest about February then?
Nudge 7] Is there a song from a musical (hint - what city does the graphic look like the guy is staring out over) that might describe EXACTLY what the meta implies?
The REVEAL:
8 Across clues with "leap" related words:
4,7,34,51 = HOP
29, 36, 44, 50 = JUMP
The starting letters of those answers spell LEAP YEAR.
THe puzzle was published 2/28/24 meaning there is, because of the LEAP YEAR, on day more in February. The hit musical "Les Miserables" has as one of it's main songs "One Day More" which was the intended answer.
ALTERNATE ANSWER:
What I did not anticipate is that Clue 1A and 32D both have an answer that could logically be tied to the musical "Annie" which has as one of its main songs "Tomorrow" which makes it a very acceptable answer for this puzzle.

For some reason, my PDF printed with Darth as the constructor instead of Dr Tom. So I completed the grid and solved the meta before realizing that I had test-solved this. Needless to say, it was just as good the second time around!
    • Hector 2s · 2024-02-28T17:44:19.670Z
Methinks you should really accept TOMORROW? Thanks, Tom!
      • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-28T17:44:19.670Z
OH, that is VERY good, never thought of that. But it will be an acceptable answer now!
        • boharr 5s · 2024-02-28T18:18:21.360Z
My early WAG was Tommow and it was rejected (it was before you changed it). So can I claim a double solve? LOL
          • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-28T19:47:11.333Z
Certainly, but you have to do it in a red curly wig!!! I just remembered that the clue in 1A was "A comment from Annie's Sandy". Just goes to show you I never thought of "Tomorrow" as an answer because if I had that clue would have been "Pound sound" or "Collie comment"

Right, that's why I was ready to bet my bottom dollar it was TOMORROW, until entering it twelve times didn't work
      • boharr 5s · 2024-02-28T17:44:19.670Z
Don't know the song. Never saw Les Mis. So I needed a nudge. Should have known you'd have a Leap Year trick up your sleeve. Thanks!
        • Carolyn 3s · 2024-02-28T19:38:57.184Z
So I took a looked again and came up with One Day More. I assume that is the intended answer, even though my Tomorrow is now marked correct. Great puzzle, either way you look at it!
          • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-28T21:31:32.844Z
One Day More, from the (IMHO) greatest musical EVER, is indeed correct. But you cannot argue with "Tomorrow" as an answer because it fills all the criteria.
          • MatthewL 🤓9:47 · 2024-02-28T20:14:35.037Z
Tried LOOK DOWN first (you know, look before you leap), and was about to try JAVERT'S SOLILOQUY (where he looks but still leaps anyway), and then thought of the correct answer. The hard part was figuring out which musical, but thank goodness for Google image search. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!
            • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-28T21:40:10.067Z
Well with "Look Down" and "Javert's Soliloquy" you are obviously familiar with Les Mis. The unfortunate side-effect of absolutely loving that show is that I know all the music and when it was to be Leap Year and I had the 28th, I had to have a puzzle that the answer was "One Day More"
              One day more
              Another day, another meta done
This never-ending road to solving fun
This man who seem to know my mind
Will let me try a second time
              One day more

Oh, I can GUARANTEE nobody wants to see (and especially hear) that. My sometimes keen wit is FAR outshadowed by my dull ear for music. If I sing in the shower the water suddenly turns cold...message from the universe - DON'T.
            • hoover 4s · 2024-02-28T20:33:39.948Z
Definitely had to use Google here.

Needed the nudge, though in retrospect it seems like those clues should have jumped out. Got it instantly after googling hit musical songs, though my total ignorance of Les Mis meant that none of the preamble hints landed. Did at least recognize Paris in the image, so I had Les Mis in mind. Fun idea, and solid click even though implied. Though it's true I guess that if google hadn't come through I'd have been screwed. 😂

The first clue with Annie pushed me to Tomorrow

All that leaping, coupled with the lizard at 32D, put me on Team Annie. Thanks, Dr. Tom!
                    • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-29T06:17:05.380Z
Goodness, along with 1A I am now surprised ANYONE answered "ONE DAY MORE". Sigh, the things that you do not realize because you are intention blinded. Either is good...though I do have Javert about to leap in the Seine as the graphic. At least I did not give him curly red hair!
                    • Darth 29:05 · 2024-02-29T03:51:41.124Z
Is the answer "One Day More" from Les Miserables? Totally random (based on what was hidden in the grid): I typed in "One More Day" and it called it correct. Then I had to look up musicals to see if what song it went with. =)
                      • HeadinHome 3:29 · 2024-02-29T14:37:30.333Z
I now know that if I ever write a kids’ song, it will have the words JUMP and HOP in the title! Enjoyable cluing and grid; meta was just lost on me, probably because of not thinking at all about the DATE of the puzzle until nudged to do so. I could only think of the theme of being careful before doing something, or of looking at something (suggested by the intro write-up) — closest I could come was “History has its Eyes on You” from Hamilton (resonant of 28D).
                        • HeadinHome 3:29 · 2024-02-29T14:40:19.869Z
Also - I submitted TOMORROW (because of 1A)… It looks like the preferred answer was “One Day More” ? I actually had pulled that show’s song list up at one time (when looking for themes of caution/watching), so nothing hit me. When you gave the nudge about the date, “Tomorrow” occurred right away.
                          • DrTom constructor · 2024-02-29T22:43:16.906Z
Well it looks like I led people into TOMORROW more than ONE DAY MORE. No matter, the thought process is the same and if I had thought about it I certainly would have included that from the start, I'd have probably even mentioned it in the intro! The Crossword Rabbit is probably chuckling at me right now because the rabbit hole contains a perfectly logical escape route from the bag.
                          • Ergcat 17:10 · 2024-02-29T19:17:53.558Z
Ah, reading comments…. you were looking for “One Day More” from Les Miz! I love Les Miz and that was my first thought ( song from it dealing with “leaping”) but I was focused on “leap” or “jump” ( Javerts leap!) but nothing clicked for me! Then I searched songs from many hit musicals until “Tomorrow “ clicked as yesterday was the 28th! Very clever but needed the nudges!
                            • rjy 3s · 2024-03-01T03:13:55.795Z
Finally joined you all at the finish line… phew! My wife mentioned “Leaping Lizards” which led me to the 32D clue - forgetting 1A (duh!) - and then to Tomorrow. I had considered
                              • Wicked: Defying Gravity (“…It's time to trust my instincts, Close my eyes and leap”)
                              • Hamilton: Wait for it (Burr’s song about looking, looking, looking - and waiting - before he leaps)
                              • Pirates of Penzance: Paradox (about a pirate forever stuck in indentured servitude because he’s to be freed on his 21st birthday, and he was born on Feb 29th, so good luck with that!!)
                              • and looked into any show with a Motown tie - The Wiz, Dream Girls, Motown - given the symmetrical corner placement of EMINEM and ARETHA
All that said, a clever concept and a fun one to wrestle with… cheers, all!

Well that is a tortuous path! I guess that is the ultimate problem with an inferred answer, it all depends on what is inferred by things and that is not always the inference you hoped. TOMORROW is a fine answer though.
                              • KayW 🤓9:02 · 2024-03-01T03:12:09.381Z

It all makes sense now. As usual the clues made it all worthwhile.

I had the CD, saw the movie, and still needed five nudges. I always thought the song was One More Day so I'm glad you accepted that.
