First Impressions

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta makes quite an impression
It is always important to make a good first impression. That initial encounter can leave people with a lasting opinion of you (or of a perfectly delightful puzzle!).
Hopefully, that is exactly what this little MEOW does. I am going to go out on a limb and ascribe KITTEN/CALICO status to it because my tester (the indefatigable whimsy) had no trouble with it and even had me toughen it up a bit.
There will Friday nudges of course and the reveal will be posted on the 16th.
Nudges:
Nudge 1] There meta answer is 10 letters
Nudge 2] The theme answers are symmetrically placed
Nudge 3] All the relevant answers have the same characteristic
Nudge 4] The first title of this puzzle was "Initial Impressions"
The Reveal:
There were 10 initialisms in the puzzle. There were other abbreviations but they were not initialisms. The ten were symmetric throughout the grid and the first letter of the 10 spelled out SIGNET RING, certainly something that makes quite an impression and the answer to the meta.

Easter eggs, well there were a couple. The intro talks about an initial encounter leaving a lasting opinion (or impression of course) and prominently on the hand of the gentleman holding the sign is a signet ring! There may have been others but those were the intended ones.

Not sure I'd call this a kitten/calico, but it was easier (for me) thank the MGWCC week 1 we just had! Nice fill and fun cluing as well, 52D was a great one.

It took less time to make than it took me to finally solve the MGWCC as well!!!
      Thank you for solving

        52D is a popular clue!

Glad to use my college Latin once in a while, as on 14D. Fun puzzle.

I used to use it daily...but mainly to maintain the mystique. I'm delighted you enjoyed it and followed your initial idea!

Was it a GE light? So glad there is one less kitty in the dark.

Fun one -- spent way too much time trying to make this more complicated than it turned out to be. Loved the cluing, especially 52D -- took me a minute to see it, and then it gave me quite the chuckle. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!

Thanks Matthew, I quite liked that one myself. Yes, once all the initialisms make themselves clear it is a symmetric ride to the answer. Appreciate the solve!

Clever! And always enjoy the clues. LOL my first submission was SIGNING - I missed the chunk in the middle, and thought back to the days of "pressing hard" while SIGNING to make sure carbon copies were legible (yep, I'm THAT old)
                  • DrTom constructor · 2024-01-10T22:06:37.263Z
Oh my, I remember that too, and all the hullabaloo about felt pens. Back in the day when medication orders were written on carbon sheets so that an original could be in the chart and a copy for the physician and a copy for Pharmacy, felt pens were the bane of everyone's existence. Glad that this finally had a familiar RING to it!

Thank you Crosshare; in a moment of anger I responded in kind to a comment I should have simply reported and ignored. There is no place on here, or for that matter anywhere, for that type or behavior and I apologize.

I'm not sure why this was hard for me to see, but there was much head-slapping after a nudge. Very clever, thanks Dr. Tom!

Needed the nudge to finally release the cat. Like KayW I was trying to find something “SIGning” related, but focused incorrectly on the N of NOR instead of NRA… couldn’t shake it. Doh! Thanks DrTom!

Well I can certainly commiserate about getting an idea stuck in your head. probably the last 3 or 4 WSJ/MG puzzles have left me repeatedly looking for a way to solve with my preconception when the actual way was almost slapping me in the face. Preconceived ideas on solving only work if that idea is right, and I am about 10% on that, though here an initial idea would have been perfect! Glad you went back to it, thanks for solving.

Should have been easier than I made it. Was trying to do the right thing from the start, but had a hard time seeing the themers for some reason. Fun stuff, thanks.

Usually, with my puzzles, if you feel you have to manipulate the answers in an odd way to get the meta...you are doing it wrong. I am a MUCH less clever constructor than that. I put all my creativity into writing clues. Thanks for coming back to basics and solving.

Spent way too long trying to do something with the ten longest answers.

My titles and intro often hold a clue, as does my graphic. I had "initial" in the intro as a nudge of sorts. Remember, that I tend to put my time into writing clues not coming up with intricate mechanisms. I mean I have a few that are more complex, but 9 out of 10 times it will be very simple. THanks for the time you spent, and for solving.

Well thanks even more then, I thought that perhaps the rather front and center placement of the signet ring on the hand of the guy holding the sign might have been over the top, but it seems it was hiding in plain sight.
