Top-Level Domains

Meta Prompt
The meta answer, which would be a good sixth theme entry, is someone who leads a rich existence.
Welcome, friends, to this week's Smooth Sailing Sunday meta puzzle. This one is called "Top-Level Domains." The photo shows the spectacular Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air, Maryland. We had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful domain last summer for a bluegrass concert.
NUDGES
Nudge 1: What is a top-level domain, anyway?
Nudge 2: Do you see any of them in the asterisked answers?
Nudge 3: Is there another common one that is missing from the five themers?
Nudge 4: There's a word that's used three times in the clues -- far more than chance! -- that might serve as a useful signpost.
Nudge 5: There's also a number in the clues that appears far more than three times. What is it?
Nudge 6: And how should you use it, you ask? Why, reread the clue for 36A.
My deep thanks to Alan Kennan, Bob Harris, Cap'n Rick, and an incognito test-solver -- their suggestions greatly improved this puzzle. And where would we be without Joe Ross, who has been a paragon of patience while teaching all of us constructors how to format our puzzles for publication? (That is a rhetorical question. Where we would be is in deep trouble.)

My first impulse was "Milord." NIce puzzle, "clean" as Al would say, and perfect for Sunday morning. But I haven't found the extra little bit.

There's an unusually high, and relevant, frequency of a certain numeral in the clues ...

Fun puz! Thanks, Wendy. I saw the commonality in the starred clues, but had to think about it a minute cuz I thought of .int for international. :D

Thanks for solving, Darth! And you are right; that is one reason why I am not entirely happy with this puzzle.

Thanks, Wendy -- very nice! I had to go to a list because I couldn't think of any others (except things like countries) but as soon as I saw MIL I jumped on it because of a few clues that had registered with me.

Ha! Internet domains was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title but it went completely out of my mind when I started the puzzle and I had a bit of work solving.
But ... what's with all the "10" stuff? (I guess two clues doesn't count as a lot but the 2 military clues were noticeable. What was up with those?)
                  Great puzzle! Thanks.

Thanks for solving, Woozy. The "military" in the clues pointed to .mil, and the six 10's in the clues provided confirmation of the "million," per clue 36A.

Wow, never even noticed the 6 10s, I went with the Powers of 10 and sixth theme entry - DUH! Very nice sewing together.

Very nice! I was originally trying to find an answer that was in the grid- couldn't find MIL or any other common TLDs in there. Then, wait- you never said it was in the grid! Dumb assumption. LOL.

So I kinda guessed at it - assuming .MIL => millionaire as I wasn’t sure how the 10s fit in, but now I see there are six, and 10^6 is a million. Clever!
                                • HeadinHome 🤓1:59 · 2024-07-08T03:00:39.509Z
noticed a lot of strange repetitions but still needed the nudges! I was just sure the Green Acres clue was going to be part of the meta… what made you think of Lisa Douglas for that entry?

I have absolutely no idea. My mind makes some strange free-association leaps while coming up with clues. Thanks so much for solving!
                                  • DrTom 4s · 2024-07-08T16:03:04.418Z
Fun! You had me searching for things like an L above Roman numerals (apparently C̅ is the notation for 100,000) because of your "powers of ten" nudge. I had already decided that since 10 to the sixth ("...a good sixth theme...") was a million and a millionaire would live a rich existence that would be my answer but getting there.... Then as I was looking for things above other things and commonalities I saw EMU then EDU and remembered the title of the puzzle. I mean you didn't have that for no reason and there they were - nicely camouflaged. With what I had already surmised MILlionaire then made perfect sense.
                                    Nice Sunday Sail Wendy
